Well my 87 now falls into the catagory of being able to get classic car insurance. The problem I have run into is that every company that I have checked requires that the car is stored indoors to be able to apply for the insurance. I currently live in an apartment complex so indoors is not gonna happen at this time but I would like to get the insurance to avoid having to take it through inspection again and putting cats back on it. Does anyone know of a company that will still insure the car even if it is not stored indoors?

I would think that the only thing you could do is check with your current insurance company and see if they can up your coverage in some way as the classic specific companies will require you have another daily driver and that you store the mustang in the garage.

Call grundy, I don't remember them requiring it be garaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

3) Are my cars covered while parked outside or left unattended?

Underwriters will want to know that you take extraordinary care of your motorized vehicles and require that your cars are garage-kept; however, leaving a car unattended or in the driveway overnight is not the basis for denying a claim. Insurance companies and their policies are carefully regulated by 50 separate state Insurance Departments to protect you from unclear, hidden or fine-print exclusions.

I doubt anyone will put agreed value insurance on a car that sits outside. Maybe you can rent a garage? I don't know if that would fly with them, though.

I just saw they have this, too, though...

Agreed Value policies are available for your daily drivers with Grundy Insurance's MVP policy. Yes, that's right! We agree on a predetermined value of your vehicle. In the event of a total loss, that amount is paid.

Might be worth looking into. I may need to do that myself once my 1993 LX is done.

Thats actually a great help. I am currently looking for a garage to store it in but still want to put classic insurance on it before hand. The car is no longer my daily driver but I still want classic tags on it for state inspection reasons. I'll have to look into grundy a little further I'll let you know what I find.

Ok well bad news for at least mean in regards to Grundy Insurance. Aparently you need a minimum of three vehicles at least two classics and a daily to even be able to apply for the insurance. The fact that I only have two cars elliminates that option for me.

I don't think my insurance is classic, i'm pretty sure it's collector.
Here in NJ, the insurance isn't what determines your car to be classic, it's how it's registered and with that type of registration comes mileage restrictions.
It isn't hard to get classic registration, but the mileage is too low to make it worth it.

For the record, i pay $300 a year, no mileage restrictions, i just can't drive it to work or school.

I have grundy.
Stated value, no mileage restriction, not sure the actual title of what mine is called, but i think it's collector/pleasure vehicle.
No driving to work or school.
I have a work van for my business, my explorer is on my regular policy, then our rav4 and pickup are on my wife's policy.

Believe it or not, my 4.6 conversion passes 1990 emissions standards without cats, when i found that out, i gave up on my pursuit of classic registration.

The majority of classic car insurance policies state that a classic car must be stored in a secured & enclosed in private place when not in use. Check this out here - http://www.lelandwest.com/faq/

Appropriate storages include private residential garages, private building or sheds, rental storage units. It is very important to inform your insurer that if you do not own a garage.
