Well I have a stock clutch cable, and it engages/disengages way down on the floor on the pedal. Are adjustable clutch cables any good or are they a real pain?
I have the Ford adjustable cable, seems just like the factory cable except it has and adjustment on the end. My original factory cable was streched, and almost seized.
Don't waste your time on just a cable, get a whole system, a PITA to install, yes but they are so much nicer. The factory POS is a a "self adjusting" unit which uses a plastic quadrant with an adjuster which uses teeth to hold it's position, on mine, the teeth on the last notch had worn off, combined with the streched worn out cable, I could hardly shift, near inpossible to go into reverse. I now have the MM quadrant and FWA and the FMS adjustable cable.
On my '86, the pedal kept getting closer to the floor over time. Tried the stocker adjustment thing many times to no avail. Finally, had to replace the clutch so I did the whole quadrant, F/W adjuster R&R thing using Steeda pieces, with an OEM cable. Turns out that the stock quadrant's teeth had worn off, so it was totally useless for adjustment. As someone said, probably better to use an OEM cable with the aftermarket quadrant and F/W adjuster of your choice. Mine works great, although the R&R of the stocker is a PITA - worth every expletive though.
I've had a BBk quadrant and adjustable cable on my 86 GT for about 7 or 8 years and have never broken a cable and I drive it pretty hard.Ford cables are probably better quality but they aren't worth the extra $
