Clutch help--which adjustment setup?

my TOB is going bad--i have that annoying whine and it looks torn up. i got the steeda firewall adjuster but i can't use it because steeda says i need their quadrant (i've already tried and it didn't work, didn't give me enough slack so i guess i do need their quadrant).

i'm gonna replace the tob and was wondering which you guys recommend and how much $ it costs. i'm guessing you're gonna say get one from FORD.

i also want to get an aftermarket quadrant so i can have as much adjustability as possible. should i just get teh steeda one to go w/ the firewall adjuster, or what? the cable looks good, so i'm not going to replace that. what set-up are you guys runnig and how is it working out? i'm looking to spend under $100.

I am confused. If you have a stock quadrant, you can use that to make the adjustment. Or if you have an adjustable (at the fork) cable, you can adjust it there too).

FWIW, I went with an oem cable, single hook quad and Extreme FWA on the fox and it performs very nice. I spent 100 beans, but the SN95 cable is a little more (MM might have as good a deal as anyone. I did not research it for SN's).

If your Steeda FWA is all that is holding you up otherwise, I would sell it and get a different FWA that works with your combo. I missed what components you run now to try and make suggestions.

I have steeda setup on my car. It's a nice piece and I believe you can buy the individual pieces. The only complaint is about 5,000 miles after install, the cable would pop off the quadrant when you took your foot off the clutch. I used some tape to solve my problem. Steeda now sells a clutch pedal stop to eliminate this problem.

sorry, i know my post might have been a little ambiguous.

right now my set-up is completely stock. the only aftermarket piece i have is the steeda firewall adjuster that i need to get a quadrant for in order to make it work.

i am going to get an aftermarket quadrant and a ford tob, and i'm curious as to what adjustment set-up you guys are using. sorry for the confusion and thanks for the help. keep 'em coming.

Thanks for the clarification. If it were me, for nice componentry, I would get Fiore's stuff (if it works for SN95's). The FWA is very trick. See Jeremy Thompson's full review for more info (installed on his 4 eyed fox).

If on the cheap, go the route I did and use the UPR triple hook quad, OEM cable (if needed - it is worth the extra cost. I think MM sells them for 60-70 bucks), and FWA of your choice. You might check with Danny - I think he was going to install similar components a little while back. I am not sure if him having his car under water hindered that project though.

As an aside, did you release the quadrant and pawl before you tried to hook up the cable (with the new FWA installed)? Otherwise, the quad would be adjusted for not having the FWA and might be a little tight.
I have a bud who uses a UPR FWA on a stock quad (on a fox) and it works real nice for him. I have not seen a Steeda FWA, but I cant imagine it is hugely different than other FWA's out there. I just had to ask in case it helps for now.

i adjusted the clutch after installing the steeda FWA (by pulling up on the cable until it *clicks, then pushing the pedal all the way down a couple times) and the clutch fork wasn't going back all the way--guess i need about a half-inch more slack. since steeda says you need their quadrant in order to use their FWA, i figured that's why it wasn't working. my bro-in-law (who's a mustang guy and has messed with and taken apart MANY) couldn't figure it out, either. hope that helps your diagnosis.

Paul, I cant think of anything else to offer. I have not used the Steeda FWA before, so I dont know what is going on.

I can say that I encountered a similar issue when using my SVO single hook quadrant on the fox. The SVO quad only came with the Ford adjustable cable, and would not work with my new OEM non-adjustable cable. The SVO quad was about twice as long as the UPR single hook I installed to replace it, and I could not install the new cable onto that old quad (it would have required me to pry on the fork to get the cable on - not good).

That is neither here nor there - just sympathizing since it sounds like we went through similar issues but with different components.

As others suggested (I think), I have read that the Steeda cable is needed for some Steeda components, but that is just a recollection from threads some time back. It rang a bell though.

thanks, man. yeah, i understand what you mean--i would've had to mess w/ the clutch fork so i decided to not use the FWA until i get the quadrant.

i had the steeda quadrant and firewall adjuster. just recently switched to the fiore performance setup. there is no comparison between the two. i would recommend the fiore setup all the way. and as was said above, an oem throwout bearing will work fine. while you are in there, make sure the bearing retainer is in good shape otherwise you may find yourself having problems again.

the steeda fwa should work with the stock quad. it is the same as my summit one with the exception of having a little allen head screw to hold the adjustment. i got the steeda quad and steeda fwa but never installed the steeda fwa because i already had the summit one in there. i would try adjusting the fwa all the way towards the firewall then hook the cable up to the quad. then you should be able to bring the fwa away from the firewall and it should take up the slack. you did remove the plastic piece from the stock cable right?

yeah, tried it with it removed and with it on. we spent about 4 hours trying different configs with no avail. i noticed that when it was the tightest, the TOB would squeek--when i'd lift up on the clutch to give it slack, plus with the FWA, the squeek would stop and you could actually see the TOB not moving like it's supposed to--which leads me to believe i do, in fact, need the steeda quadrant because either the 2nd or 3rd hook would give the slack i need. i'm probably gonna order today or tomorrow and install next week sometime. i'll let you guys know. thanks for the help, i sure do appreciate it :SNSign:

you remove the plate on the underside of the tranny. my bro-in-law's got a pit, so it makes it even easier.
