Clutch question - conflicting opinions

Alright, got a question for yas to settle a little debate.

let's say you are approaching a stop sign, do you :

A. Put the clutch in, coast to the stop sign, then brake.
B. Start braking/coasting(without clutch in) until you near the stop sign, waiting aslong as you can before having to put the clutch in

I use c)

push the clutch in, shift to neutral, let the clutch out, and brake to a stop...

C most of the time but occasionally B.

depends on how fast I need to stop. Most of the time it's C but some time's it is Dush in clutch and brake at same time while disengaging the gear.

As far as what is best for the life of your clutch I would say C:

I usually put the car into neutral when approaching intersections, especially when there is a long train of cars ahead.

Depends on the situation though, if I know it's going to turn green in a second I'll coast in gear, if need be press the clutch in last second then neutral.

Either wait until the last moment to take it out of gear and put it N and let off clutch or I will put it in N and coast with foot off clutch. I've noticed that the "stalling" issue only happened when I kept the clutch pushed in.

Ive always do A I guese ill just replace the clutch when it wears out.

You guys use your "Option C" if its just a stop sign too? Like a 4-way stop where its just stop and then go again?

Sometimes I downshift a little to save my brakes a little, and almost always keep it in gear to let the engine help slow the car....try and get and even wear between the brakes and the clutch.

Given the ease of swapping out brakes compared to a clutch, and the cost of pads compared to a clutch.... why would anyone want to have an even rate of wear between the two. Lifetime brake pads can be had for $30 and can be changed in a half-hour. Clutches are not even close.

Jeez, I cannot believe so many of you freakin push the clutch in immediately, and shift to neutral. My wife does "A" and it drives me crazy. I am teaching her though...!
I really don't care if this causes additional wear on the clutch. It's minimal. And I'm not talking about down shifting, I mean just leaving it in the gear it's in until the RPMs drop to around 1000-1200. I just don't see the benefit to clutching it immediately - you just have to use more of the brakes.

it realy depends on how long i have to stop...if im just crusing, ill put it in neutral and use the brakes...if in going fast, ill downshift while i brake to help slowdown.

Q: what kills more clutch,
1.pushing it in while you coast to a stopsign
2. puting it in nuetral
3.letting the car ride in gear until the last secong where you push in the clutch?

I usually push in it when the RPM's drop to about 1500/1800 then brake to a stop...for what it's worth I got over 100K mile on my stock clutch...

I think it's harder on the engine than on the clutch to do that.


I always use C from above.
