I need to replace my oem clutch but I want to go aftermarket. I don't really know what companies are good to get clutches from or anything. Any suggestions?

I just had a Spec put in my 87 about 2 months ago and love it! It grabs nice and hard and is still driveable for the street. Car is mostly stock also.

Ram has some very reliable replacement and heavier duty clutch kits at some good prices. The centerforce dual friction is a decent performance one but a little pricey. Also another one you'll hear stangers liking is the spec (stage 3 is it?).

One trend you will notice throughout a lot of clutch kits is the name Valeo - which is an OEM manufacturer and aftermarket supplier of clutch discs.

Don't install a Spec III unless you're just tired of your tranny. They eat T-5s. hehe

Well like anything else, how you treat it goes a long way in determining how long it'll go before something gives. That Spec III is very grabby and has enough holding power to twist that T-5 into many crunchy chunks.

www.ddperformance.com Is where you can get a king cobra, FMS HD or a mcleod dual friction. Those are the ONLY clutches i'd ever use.

Yep. My mcleod dual friction disk is sitting here next to me and i'll be buying another king cobra pressure plate. I got a dude buying my old king cobra clutch and stock flywheel for $175 The king cobra pp did feel a little softer than the fms HD i had for 5 years.

It was fine, I ran it for 5 years and I must have been used to it. But i had it set pretty good with a firewall adjuster, fms quad and an adj cable. My Gf couldn't push it down all the way lol. The king cobra pressure plate made it a little softer but nothing too huge.

Mike, interesting about the HD vs KC comments. i have the HD unit as well. not too bad (till i drive something hydraulic, then the contrast gets me). i kinda wondered how much lighter a KC kit was. im leaning toward a KC for next time.

actually, i would stick with the stock non-adjustable cable and get a FWA (and aftermarket quadrant if you dont have one). adjustable cables are not as well liked as stock cables.

good luck.

I have had a King Cobra clutch and loved it! I sat in a FMS HD clutched car and the pedal feel was quite a bit stiffer to push down...

I would prefer the King Cobra.

Centerforce makes some great clutches as well

If your HD clutch ever dies or you want to replace it I would do the king cobra over the HD next time. When I first pushed down the pedal with my king cobra clutch I noticed the difference immediatly. Its not like going from a HD to a hydrolic clutch but its definatly a little softer. I'm going to buy another king cobra pressure plate once this kid sends the money out for my old KC clutch kit and flywheel.

Anyone have a picture for proper clutch cable routing? Now that my motor is out of the car I kinda forgot exactly how it routes.
