OK, I have a couple of questions. I've got a '93 Hatch that I use as my bracket car. I've got many drivetrain, chassis and suspension mods so it is set to run low 10's. However, I am still using my original motor because up to this point it has made me very succesful bracket racing so I don't want to mess with a good thing. Our local track is splitting up the footbrake class into sportsman and pro. ET cutoffs for pro will be 10.00-13.99 and sportsman will be 13.00-slower. I currently run 14.2's in the summer air. I am used to being the slower car so I am going to stick with the faster class. I need to find .3 seconds. I am considering a Cobra intake. Has anybody installed a Cobra intake on a stock motor? If so, how much ET did it pick up? I do have 1.72 rockers on the car also. My other questions: What is the difference between the original and the replica intakes I have been seeing? Where is the best place to buy one? Also, do the lower intake ports match the stock heads, or would I need to port match them?

the intake ports should match up pretty well but you could always port match them for better flow. im sure the cobra will give you those three tenths. it looks like your car is setup pretty damn well and should actually be running faster than it is. it also looks like your car could go on a diet. 3400 pounds is heavy....is that full interior? the replicas just have a rougher casting from what i understand. if you can find an original ford production go for it...but i wouldnt worry too much about it. also, a nice little cam would help out a bunch especially with that 3000 stall

It really isn't that slow, down here in South Florida we have TERRIBLE air during the summertime. Density altitudes are usually 2800-3200 feet. I don't want to make a project out of this. I am in the beginning stages of piecing together a 400+ CI SB to get into the mid 10's with no power adders. I just need the car to run 13.99 or quicker in the worst air for now. But, there are 2 things I refuse to do:
1. I will not gut the car. It's actually around 3,480 pounds with me. I am real big on full interior racecars. I just like the look of a racecar that looks street worthy.
2. I will not yank any of the accessories. AC, PS, etc. will stay on the car. Again, just personal preference.

Over the 8 years I've been racing it, I have tried everything possible and this setup has got the car just about maxed out as far as ET.

the cobra intake should definetly help you out some....as far as 3 tenths....maybe or maybe not. just gonna have to see. but i would assume that it would get you there. also, have you tried adjusting the upper control arms at all to see if you can get more bite and drop your 60 ft way down?

I've heard nothing but bad things about the new replica intakes. I would look at a real cobra intake or a different option

3 tenths from just an intake change is gonna be hard........the new Cobras have less consistant runner corss sections than the original castings, but either will work for your car - I'd try to find an original if your not going to port the intake. I've not heard any quality or fitment issues with the new Cobras I have ported for guys.

The lower portion of my made in china Cobra intake has a small baffle that is not robust enough to keep the oil in the lifter and pushrod bay. The small baffle allows oil to be sucked into the intake on hard acceleration. If you get one, make sure you contact Ford Racing and ask for a larger baffle.

I just put a cobra intake on my combination and had it dyno'ed before and after the change. The results are in this thread.

http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=669492

I gained EVERYTHING above 4000 rpm. Below that curves for the stocker were higher. I actually lost average torque throughout the run. My peak torque and hp numbers were moved up 100 rpm a piece, and my peak #'s went from 211hp at 5000rpm, to 222hp at 5100rpm. My torque was 271 at 3500rpm and went to 266 at 3600rpm.

Mainly the cobra flattened out and extended the torque curve. I would think with the way drag racing is set up, the loss of torque would help you to get a better launch(depends what rpm you launch at). And the hp gain up top would help you mph, and et. I unfortunately haven't taken my combination to the track yet.

The suspension has been adjusted for max traction. The Strange 10-way adjustables really do the trick. The car never has traction issues with the 11.5 inch tires and almost 3,500 pounds. BTW, if anybody does have traction issues, I highly recommend the Strange shocks/struts. The only downfall on these is the adjusters are plastic and you need to be easy on them as to not break them. I haven't broken them, but they feel cheap. The adjustments do allow for a large range of rebounds.

I thought the Cobra intake put down better HP increases than what modusmortis came up with. I guess you need more mods to take advntage of it. My thinking was that it might take advantage of the higher ratio.

Oh, I need to add to my list....

3. Nitrous is out of the question. I know a simple 50 HP dry shot would easily do it, I am not a big fan of it.

VERY similar results to what my customers have seen and that can be found in the dyno results on my site. Everything else being equal, the guy with the highest average torque curve is gonna win a race, so get the suspension set up to handle the torque/power you make down low, don't make it soft on the bottom to get traction - get the traction in the suspension and tires!

It's possible to get the stock intake to flow 190cfm when ported correctly. This is only about ~15cfm short of a Cobra and the smaller section of the stock intake means air charge velocity is higher - more average torque is normally the result. Makes a surprising little intake (to some) on a 302-306ci engine.

Guys who have not experienced a high flat torque curve can get fooled by the "buttometer" if they are used to "feeling" the kick in of a combo that comes on at a certain rpm. With a high flat torque curve, you hit it low and BAM the power is there and you don't feel that "kick in" - so, take it to the track and see what happens. Average torque is where it's at in my book......
