Has anyone here ever installed one of these in your SN-95? I've seen them for sale for anywhere from $600 to over $1200. I have heard that they will basically bolt up in place of our stock rear ends. Is this true? How much of a job is it?

I'm kinda surprized that no one here has piped in yet. I figured several of you guys would have made this swap. From everything I've read it bolts right up to all of the stock mounting points. There may be like two holes you have to drill or something.

Stangnet is always slow on the weekends, not a good time to post anything if you want a quick replay. As far as your question I have no idea.

Well... It's not like I'm gonna buy one this weekend or anything. Hell... I ain't even got my heads on yet. They're sitting in the garage.

Best friend had a 99 Cobra.

Best friend had bad wheel hop.

Best friend had bent half shafts.

Best friend sold 99 Cobra.

Don't know if the other year models had those issues but his and from what I read about other 99's just could not take much abuse.

The funny thing about that car was it did not wheel hop every time. My friend told me one time it even did it in the rain.

Another thing about that car that was such a bummer to me was it had absolutely no low end torque. At mid rpms it was just starting to come on strong.

OTOH.....If you went to the floor with it at say 4k it was really impressive.

Not for me...................No thank you....................
Not my idea of how a fun street car is supposed to be :notnice:

IRS in the cobra is a joke it's soo compresed stock that it isn't worth it our chasis was desinged for soild rear axle...a tq arm set up will out run a IRS set up any day in the SN95....but to answer your question it would basicly bolt up you may have to weld some mounts on but thats about it. the mustang chasis was basicly same from 1979-2004

Our rears not being designed for and IRS is true. Ford reverse engineered the IRS to fit under a stock chassis with minimal modifications. So its not really a well designed IRS, it's just one that fits onto the car really easy. This makes it nothing but a big compromise. I bet it does ride better on bumpy roads and provides more traction on bumpy roads but on a smooth road course or parking lot (for autocross) the benifits are minimal. Heck I went autocrossing last weekend and got a ride in a stock 04 cobra convertible. The only difference I noticed between that car and mine was that it transitioned worse due to the softer chassis and extra weight and that he had wheel hop on the launch and I didn't. If the IRS was great, I would swap over in a heart beat because of the less unsprung weight and the fact that it acutally worked well. But it does not, and therefore I already have a PHB and a torque arm will come soon. Both setups will cost you about the same+/- a few hundred bux, so in the end (IRS vs. TA/PHB) it really comes down to (at least for me) can you deal with the solid axel on bumpy roads and if you care about being different by being able to say OH! I have an IRS under there. The choice is up to you.-Robin

Yeah... That is discouraging. Since my new combo might be putting out 320 FWHP I figured that the Cobra rear end would hold up to it.

Since it is a mainly street car, and it will have less than 350 fwhp, I was hoping that it would give it better road manners. Better cornering under spirited daily driving, bumpy real world street conditions, etc... And to be honest I do think it would up the cool factor of my car to have an IRS in a 94 5.0 GT
