I have a cold air kit on my 1993 GT that puts the round 7" or so tall high flow filter inside the fender area. I have NEVER had a problem with this set up until today. I was driving for hours in fairly heavy rain and the car started randomly bucking every so often - sometimes worse than others. Of couse I was 2 hours from home and could not stop but I did think about it..... Heavy rain, lots of mist from trucks at 65mph for extended period of time = soaked air filter that is probably dripping water droplets onto my MAF heated wires causing it to buck since it rapidly cools them and the computer cannot compensate so quickly. I stopped at a gas station 50 miles after this started and SURE ENOUGH the filter was DRIPPING WET! I have all the factory plastic shields in place with no damage to any of them and the fog lights are in place. You would think that it would not get that wet! Wrong!!! It got so wet that I only got 20 mpg during the rainy part of the drive and after having let it sit and the rain stopped I got 26mpg on the way home - BIG difference!!!! Now the question is - Does anybody make some sort of shield to put around the air filter inside the fender?

Glad to hear it. That's kinda nuts that you were having issues with a filter so high. It's not like you have a 944 or something. Thanks for sharing the info - my 94 has a CAI (and is lowered a good bit) so I should check out the shields on ebay - I've been meaning to make something but havent gotten off my butt.

not to sound like an ass but isn't that why they make those bypass valves for that go inline of your intake or are they for if you almost submurge your filter in water.
another ? wouldn't they work to use as a MAF fill in the reason I ask this is I might get a CAI and I don't have mass air and the kits for my car are the short ram style and I want the style for the 89+ so it puts the filter in the fender or would I be better to use a real maf and have a dummy maf for now.

My buddy has a lowered 97 prelude with a CAI. He drove through a slightly flooded street going 20 mph and 2 minutes later his engine stalled and wouldn't turn over again. He hydro-locked the engine and wound up having to replace the entire thing.

I've got a CAI in the same location, and my car is lowered. I've never had a problem with mine. "It rains a little here" too.
