cold air question

Did anyone get a cold air intake without getting a new mass air unit and actually pick up hp? It seems to me that a cold air won't give you any additional power unless you get one, but they don't seem to mention that on the ads that say "gain up to 10 horses." Thanks

I have a MAC cold air intake system on mine and didnt notice any signifcant change. About the only differance i had was throttle response. It maybe advertised as giving up about 10hp but it actually is about 1 or 2 from what i hear.

yeah I think they should just tell you when they adverstise that you are only going to get the additional hp if you spend a few hundred on a new mass air too

Bigger mass air meters arent always better. I still have the stock one with my combo. I have heard to many horror stories about people having horrible idles after mass air meter installs.
I also dont get how people say a cai only gets you 1-2 hp when almost everyone will say swapping the factory air filter out with a k&n will net you at around 5hp. When you get a cai you also get a new air filter, usually a k&n so you will see more than 1-2hp increase

My only complaint with Cold air kits is the false advertising. I can see calling it a Fresh Air Kit since the filter is in the fender but not cold air. Go drive a car with a chrome cold air kit for 10 minutes then wrap your hand around that chrome tube and tell me how you can call it a cold air kit. the tube is so hot it will burn you. The only CAI kit worth buying would be made of plastic ie: K&N FIPK or densecharger, etc.

BBK CAI here. Not sure about HP, but I did notice the throttle response.

Yup, buy a densecharger and it won't be nearly as hot.

Cold Air Kit doesn't mean the air temp is below freezing. It simply means the air will be cooler than with the stock setup. This is especially true with the fender wall mount. The air coming up through there is generally cooler than the air under the hood due to the temp from the engine block. Plus, most aftermarket parts advertise engine horsepower gains, not rear-wheel. That way the numbers sound bigger. So, if you see a Cold Air Kit advertise 5-10HP gains, that means more like 3-6 RWP gains. The kit alone is not where the power comes from, but when you add the kit, with a TB, with MAF sensor, etc. is where you start seeing some real difference.

Dont forget theres a diffrence between gaining 10 HP peak and gaining 10 HP at some point in the RPM range!

The advertised 10 HP probs comes in the upper RPM's.

That or they turned the AC one during the first dyno run, switched in
the new part and then turned off the AC.. Wow look at those gains..

if these "cold air" kits give you so little power gains, wouldnt it be equally good to just remove the snorkel and drop in a k&n? or is there a big difference between these two setups?
