Collapsed lifter? I really need some advice!

Actually, the 2.272" is the factory spec length.

I thought I remember reading that 6.250" was the stock length  I do know for a fact that Tom knows more about these cars than I do though!

This is interesting....I wonder why mine ranged from 6.246" to 6.250"(measured with a Mitutoyo digital caliper). They aren't bent at all.

Guess its time to order up a new set of pushrods then.

The Ford manual says for lifter maintenance to take them apart and clean the parts, check for worn spots and put them back together with out exchanging parts from other units.

It didn't say anything about charging them up with oil during assembly. Without oil the plunger goes right down. I don't think this is correct. I'm at a stand still until I have confidence that in these lifters.

Well guys, I put the longer pushrods in and it still makes the EXACT same noises. I'm at the end of my fuse with this project.

I really appreciate all the advice i've gotten from everyone but I just dont know what to do anymore. I've worked on this thing every night for a month and a half and am still in the same spot I was then.

This engine made NO noise before I put the thumper heads/tmoss intake on, I just have no idea where the noise is coming from, I cant seem to isolate it at all with the stethescope. Everywhere I listen I just hear ticking. Also, my valve stem tips are starting to show signs of a wear pattern on them from the roller rocker tip. What the hell is up with that?

I'm fed up with this thing. I think I pretty much need a miracle.

Thanks for the advice, Tom. My rockers do have some side to side play - I'll be running the engine with the valve covers off today to check this more thoroughly. Maybe this is the source of the noise? I don't have guide plates, however (pedestal mounts).

Mine was derfinately side play. I got side play down from ~.012" averqage to ~.006" average and the valve train is much quieter. I can still hear those .008" and .009" lifters though. To get them tightened up I'll have to try and find some c-clips that are a little thicker than the .034-.036" ones I have now.
