Colored Dots on New Tires

What do those colored dots on new tires mean? Something to do with valve stem position or high spot or weight???

I have a red and a yellow dot about 1 cm in diameter...

If memory serves, they signify the heaviest and highest spots between mounting points of the rim and tire. You're supposed to line the valve stem up as close to the yellow dot as possible, or line the red dot up as close to the factory mark on the rim when mounting.
