Well to keep it short my friend has an 86 F150 EFI 5.0L and was wanting to beef it up a bit...and he knew that I worked on my car (h/c/i) and he was wanting to go a similar route...is their any difference in the engines that could be different on his than on my 1993 Mustang...would all the torque specs be the same for the heads and all...and installing the intake/cam/ gaskets...etc...same bolt holes...

Knowing this would help me out and him in how much help we can actually assist each other... :nice:

Thanks if anybody knows...

I believe the only physical differences are cam and firing order. The same bolt patterns and bolt/head/block materials are most likely the same.

But you may want to wait for a better answer.

Thanks for the reply...

Also will Crane 1.6RR's that came off my stock heads fit on a 95 F150 5.0...aren't they the same heads (E7)...

So how about that comparison between the 86 and my car referring to the install and parts...would he use the same heads as me for example...?

The E7TE head is a truck head and the mustang actually stole it from the f150 and bronco engines. 86' should be similar even though the heads are different and the pistons should be a little different (not sure but I believe they don't have the valve reliefs on the pistons like the 87'-92' have). Torque specs should be basically the same though being very identical.

If it's an 86 HO then 87GTStang is correct. Flat top pistons, 9.2 - 9.5 compression, and no valve reliefs. About the only aftermarket head you can install without P to V clearance problems are the TFS heads. The pistons CAN be fly while still inthe vehicle if he wants to run something other than the TFS.

whats the best of doing that ? dremel tool ? i have an 86 mercury capri 5.0.

So what makes the TFS heads able to be run on his '86 and do I still buy cams for my car or does his take a different type because of the firing order...dumb question I know...I just like a confirmation...

Thanks for the responses...

Did they make 5.0 HO's in the trucks (1986)?

TFS should work OK.
Not sure about the firing order but if it is different then he will need a different cam.
The torque specs and bolt sequence will be the same.
I don't think they offered a HO motor in truck's however.

Eeeeep! No! Not unless you're a machinist and know what you're doing. Find a shop in your areas that can do the job right. Either take your heads off and tow it or drive over there and let them do the whole job.

firing order is the same as any other late model 302. The TFS heads clear the pistons on the 86 because the valve angle is different than it is on most other heads for the 302.

well i am a machinist but still wouldn't trust my self with a dremel tool. Next question is how much would a good shop charge for doing the fly cut while the motor is still in the car ?

also if i were to get a set of tfs heads what cam can i run ? i was thinking about the TFS stage 2 cam and a set of 1.7 rr's or maybe the 1.6rr's ?

on the dyno thing. i dynoed my car saturday and go 184hp and around 250tq. I have larger numbers but those are from when the car shifted in gear.

I have 1 5/8 unequal length shorties with a pypes performance off-road x-pipe 2.5" system all the way back. no cats. FMS 65mm TB and underdrive pullies. Are those numbers consistant with the parts that i have on the car ?

thanks

So I wonder what would be a nice cam that wouldn't cause any clearance issues...?

So his 86 has the same firing order as mine? Thats good...

Any thing I should remember or keep in mind while working on his truck (basically hoping someone has owned one before)...

Another friend of mine has a 95 F150 and I was going to give him my 1.6 RR (pedestal mounted) from Crane...they'll fit right...just another confirmation question?

Thanks

On the site below you guys will find a pretty good description for the TFS heads and better explanation (than mine) of P to V subject for flat top pistons. Look at the PDF file. It will talk about what cams you can use as well. I'm guessing that the 86 F150 is SD? If so then pretty much any SD cam should work. If I remember right, the lift restriction was something like .540 so 1.7 RR may be out of the question depending on what cam you decide to use. Here's the link:

Another thing to keep in mind is that the '86 F150 with a 302 is a speed density EFI setup. So if you're using the stock computer you may not feel as good of an increase in power because the fuel maps were programmed using the volumetric efficiency of the stock 302. That old of a F150 shouldn't have any electronics going to the tranny if it's an automatic (not counting park/neutral safety switch and backup lights) so you could probably put a mustang 5.0 HO engine in it as long as you replaced the ECU and harness.

If you want to keep all of the truck EFI setup, you could probably go with either a piggyback chip or find someone to reprogram your ECU.

Hmm...so his is speed density (I don't know why I didn't think about that...) I just know it is EFI but didn't think about the MAF not being in the mustangs till 89 (88 in the special californias)...

So we have the same firing order it is just that he can't run to big of a cam without clearancing problems...and also the speed density doesn't like them anyways...

It is one big mess...he drives it everyday to... ...hmm...sounds familiar :D

Oh thanks for the link Daggar...

Your 93 5.0 HO engine has a 351 firing order. His 1986 5.0 truck engine has a 302 firing order. Your 5.0 HO also uses roller lifters. His engine uses flat tappet lifters. The cams are not interchangable unless you change his computer, drill and tap his block for roller lifters and rearrange the firing order (spark plug wires).

They make parts specifically for regular 5.0s. I suggest you use them to avoid a lot of trouble.

The RR parts listings stop at 1994. There apparently was a change that prohibits using RR on 1995 and 1996 truck 5.0s. I don't know what the change was.

also ide like to ad if your going with roller lifters and a roller ho cam the you have to change the injectors the same asif your gunna change the spark
