Just wondering since Ive got a 5.0 sitting in the garage not doing anything. Are the heads from the 87 302 compatible with the older carb 289? What about headers or any of the other parts (internal or bolt on)? Im going to (when I get the cash) put the 5spd thats on the 302 in my 67 and thought while Im at it I might as well try to get some more power out of it.

Its been a while but IIRC you need to drill 2 steam holes in each head to have them work on a 289 block. (not a big deal and can be confirmed by placing a head gasket on the block, marking the holes used, then putting it on the head and rechecking. If there is no hole where a hole should be it needs drilled)

Not sure why you would need to change the timing gear/chain year on a head swap??

If the 5.0 runs. I would drop that in it. Its got forged internals, so you woulnt have to worry about the bottom end for a while.
Depends on which 87 5.0 he's got. The only parts that may be forged vs the 289 are the pistons, and that's only if the 5.0 is the HO motor.. ALL small block Fords had forged rods( ditto for all other push rod Ford V8's). Only the Bosses had forged cranks. And only the Bosses and the 289 Hi-po's had the better rods. Stock small block rods are good for 7500 rpms with good bolts. The Boss rods were good for 8500, the 289 Hi-po's were good to 7500. As for the compression loss, it's going to be more like 1 full point, the E7 heads have 10 cc larger chambers over the 67 289 heads, which would have C6OE heads with 54 cc chambers. The difference in flow won't make up for that loss. He'd be better off porting the 289 heads, or swapping pistons to pop up's to work with the E7's, that will give him a 10 to 1 ratio.

Sorry i mean just the pistons, but he doesnt have a forged crank in teh 289 so either way i thought the 302 would be a better canidate. Especialy since they are known to be fairly bulet proof with just adding ARP hardware (of course so would the 289 with forged pistons).
