Compressing air to hold valves up, do I have to prime the motor??

Im changing out my valve springs for the Ed curtis PS3 spring upgrage while the engine is on the stand and was wondering if any damage will happen if i dont prime the motor before i start compressing air into the chamber to hold the valves up since the motor will turn some or is it OK to for it to just turn a little since CHP most likely used some kind of assembly lube when they put it together.

You can manually turn it with no problems.

Are you going to set them to the right height or just drop them in?

I managed to break one or a few of those FTI PS3 springs. My heads are in the shop getting fixed.

Just drop them in, i dont have the tools to check, actualy i just got done doing it right now. Ed said they should be at the right height

They should be close enough. I think a few of mine needed shims.

And to answer you question, you can turn you engine over with no problem, CHP used assembly lube for sure...

Moroso makes a oil pump 'driller' that primes your engine up quickly by using a drill in reverse...

I would 'worry' about that for when you go to crank it up, not setting up the valvetrain...

Yeah I was just speaking from my personal experience with Ed when I had his PS3 springs. He wanted them set at a certain height, NOT just thrown in. He wanted them @ 1.82-1.83" height and a few needed shims. Hopefully these new springs can handle this cam :-/

You can rent the primer tool at autozone and get all your money back when you return it.

Bought it for my first h/c/i swap when I was 18, and used it a few weeks ago...it has paid for itself (and the gas to go back and forth to a parts store) several times over...

Ed knows what he is talking about, take his emails/calls to the T...remember, he is the expert
