I have a 94 I pulled the motor on cause I was going to rebuild it. Now I'm wondering if I even have to?? The motor has 130k on it and I thought it ran good, just front and rear main seals were leaking.

So my motor is just sitting there as a longblock and I would like to know if there is any way to tell if I need a rebuild or not?

Is the engine mounted to a stand or not? Did you disconnect the bellhousing? If you still have the bellhousing and flywheel connected, you could hook up your starter and still perform a compression check. This is probably not the safest thing to do, but just remove all of the spark plugs that way there is only compression in the cylinder you are checking.

If you had a good air compressor, a blow down compression check could be done. A cold engine does not give good compression test results since the rings seal better when everything is warm and lubricated.

See the link in my sig to build your own blow down compression tester...

This was my first thought too. :nice:
It requires but a breaker bar to turn the motor over.

Good luck.

130 K and crosshatches.. no matter what, it is out!! ring and bearings are cheap.. dont forget the timing Chain... might have run good , bthe things do wear out... cool>??
