Howdy guys/gals,

Lately the 'puter has been bogging down on this site - sometimes it wont load pages until I hit refresh a couple times. I think it's an advertisement that's causing it, but I wanted to nix those stupid signature pictures to see if it helps (Dial-up user here).
I went to my CP and couldn't figure out how to remove the sig pics without removing peoples' text data in their sigs (it's kinda nice to see that info if replying to tech threads, which I do occasionally. ). Is it possible to just ditch the pics in the sigs?

Apologies if this has been covered already. I didnt remember any threads about it.....................

Easy to fix (if you use Firefox that is). Select "options" from the "tools" menu. Then click on "content." Third item down is "load pictures." You can deselect that, but that is a little extreme. Possibly a better way to go is to click on "exceptions" button to the right of that third item. Then under "address of web site" type "forums.stangnet.com" and click "block."

I would imagine there is something similar in IE, but IE sucks.

But that would block ALL of the images right? Like avatars and everything.

I'm not sure if it actually blocks all pics if you use the exceptions method. Then it only blocks pics from that web site. But many people with pics in sig just link to some other site (like photobucket). Those pics would still come through if you just use the exceptions method. And ads would probably come through too.

I'm also gonna jump on this bandwagon... one of my favorite things about this site was that there were no sig pics.

Is there a mod out there that can shed some light on the subject?

JT found the solution
1. Go to CP
2. Go to Edit Option
3. Scroll down to the 3rd box labeld "Thread Display Options" and un check "Show Images (including attached images and images in code)"
And you're done no more pics in sig but keeps Avatars.

You can block separate elements of content on the site, such as avatars, signatures, and hotlinked images.

Go to User CP, and then options. In the visible elements section, you should see the following (with more graphics, of course):

You have the option to show or hide various elements of messages, which may be of use to users on slow internet connections, or who want to remove extraneous clutter from posts.
Show Signatures
Show Avatars
Show Images (including attached images and images in code)

We are working on a modification to allow images to be turned off in signatures, without turning off the whole signature (at the user level).

It does give you an URL to click on to view doesn't it? It's seems like the only option for now.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Scott - IE user here. I have FF DL'd but never got around to installing it and trying it out. I know I should.

Just so I know I'm not misreading anyone and ignoring wise words, the only option as of yet is to turn off sigs altogether, no? If so, I'll just deal with the issues since it's nice to see sigs so I dont make more stupid posts than normal. (e.g., Some guy with a car that wont idle right will have a sig showing 942# injectors, and I would miss that info).

As an aside, tonight things are flying. Maybe the servers just get busy for a few mins during peak times (it wasnt like that before, but SN did hit that magic member count not long ago. ).

Thanks for all the posts everyone!

I have seen some flakey stuff like:

the site seems a bit slower
have to restart ff from time to time
and such things since we went to sig pics

These minor issues are nothing that I'm all that upset about.

Just wanted to let the admins or whoever know ......

I have seen a difference

Sig pics are not that big of a deal to me.

Sooooooo

Sig pics or not :SNSign:

Currently, this is the only option. See post #9.

JT if you haven't done so you may need to defrag the computer.
1. Click Start button
2. Click on "Control panel"
3. Click on "Rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster"
It compresses files so your computer can find info faster, instead of having them scattered. It will take time for your computer to finish the task, you may just opt to do it while you sleep.

Grady, thanks for sharing. I know when you high speed folks occasionally comment about speeds, that something's a hair off or this place is hoppin'.

Tim, your post was the one I was thinking of when speaking about my not wanting to accidentally ignore wise-words. I thought I had tried the things you outlined, but wanted to make sure I wasnt missing the boat.

Danny, I do defrag and clean the disks up occasionally. This is the only site I'm having issues with, which is a one clue I use to figure that it's not so much my puter as the site perhaps. Always great advice though.

I still think it's an add-on because after I clear cookies and the IE cache, it bogs on this site. THen after a bit, in the lower right corner of the IE screen (in the border of the window, not the tool tray) I get an icon that says 'Manage add-ons' IIRC, and then things speed up. That might mean something to someone (like something is finally blocking an add on or something). Hey, I bet even my pop up blocker could be fighting something on this site (even though pop-ups are allowed on here).

Bottom line is if I'm the only one with issues, who cares.

Thanks again everyone.
