I have a 1989 5.0 that is heavily modded. I have heads, cam, intake, exhaust and AOD with a Bauman valve body and 3:73's. The only thing i havent done yet is computer work. Do all these parts even produce their potential with the stock computer commands? I sometimes think about the fact that the engine is controlled by a computer and not entirely by airflow like our ancestor cars and if the computer "knows" the parts are there; if it matters. i would like some recomandations on some chips. price is not a factor i just want quality. by the way i am running stock timing too.

The Mass Air computers are "smart" enough to compensate for mods & the changes in airflow they create.

A custom chip is useful to tailor the A/F ratio and eliminate idle problems if you have them. Don't expect a chip that you order from a speed parts warehouse to do the same job as one burned using a dyno run for the chip programming input.

If you've changed the MAF then most likely the new calibrated one could use some adjustment this will show significant gains in driveability and some power. Stock program is actually pretty good but timing tables are pretty tame. You will see more gains from modding the stock computer with aluminum heads but will definitely see gains with your heads just don't expect to see 40+ HP increases.
