coolant coming from firewall/waterpump noises

i took out my ac and all the hoses a while ago and now i have coolant leaking out of my firewall every once in a while. where is it coming from? also im starting to have cooling issues and my water pump is starting to whine. does this mean its going bad? ( noob question)

Is your heater core gone as well?


Change the water pump. It's a relatively simple job to do and will remove all doubt.

Swap your thermostat while you're at it. I'm in the habit of boiling every new stat to ensure it opens up at the proper temp prior to installation.

yeh, on the firewall the are 2 lines for the heatercore. I could be bypassed as implied by dagger above. Eather way, check the hoses and clamps back there, you should find that to be the problem.

I "think" what Daggs was saying is that if the heater core lines are just left unpluged, the remaining coolant [from inside the heater core] is sloshing around and spilling out when he applies the brakes or takes a hard corner.

Remove the heater core or plug the lines.

Yeah you also have an A/C drainage port / hole there (at the firewall passenger side) and sometimes coolant from the heater core will leak out of the drainage hole. I might add that replacing the heater core is a nasty job (not dirty nasty just friggin nasty.

i still have my heater core in the car, the hole that is leaking is on the passenger side from where i unhooked one of the a/c hoses so im not sure if that is connected to the heater core, i replaced the water pump about six months ago, should i be going through waterpumps that fast? what deg thermostat should i go with?

The hole that you mention. Does it come through the firewall? If so, that's the drain hole from the air box that I think someone mentioned above. Chances are, that your heater core is leaking beneath the dash and is draining into the air box.

No, you should not be going through water pumps that fast but it has been known to happen before.

A 180* T-stat is the best over-all performer for fuel injected Fox bodies.

hmm alright, where can i pick up a 180*t-stat? local parts store? also does anyone have a good wiring diagram for a taurus fan?

no your air box will fill up and overflow into interior carpet....and is the fluid exiting this port coolant....do you have air conditioning? because 2 types of fluid exit this port coolant if the heater core is bad and water condensation from the air conditioning evaporator located beside the heater core...

that's the weep hole I posted a while back I even posted a pic of it. Mine did the same thing I bypassed the H/C for now and I think since I don't have A/C I have a pretty simple core change..............I hope anyway

i used to have a/c i yanked it out of the car a while back. and its coolant coming out of the hole.

All the more reason to bypass or replace that leaking heater core!

Do NOT plug that hole coming through the firewall. Better that stuff leaks into the engine baythan your passenger floor area. hehe

true, thats probably a good reason not to plug the hole. how hard it is to replace a heater core?
