coolant flush help

so I'm following the bullittarchive walk through and I stumble into a problem.

first I drain my coolant. I dump a bunch of tap and not start my engine (neighbors were outside. prom or something. didn't want to bother them.) so I keep flushing it until its clean. I close the drain, and dump some coolant and after 1.5 bottles it won't go in anymore. I think there much be some in the lines, that's why I'm supposed to start the engine.

so I drain the coolant, dump tap and start the motor. after about 5 minutes, the temp gauge isn't moving, so in fear of overheating, I stop the engine.

now I come to you folks. was there more coolant in the system, that's why the new coolant didn't go in? do I need to keep her running longer?

and I just changed my fuel filter, and the car won't start. started once, but not again. do I keep trying until she goes?

never mind the fuel filter. i forgot to lug back in the fuel kill switch.

i flushed her again with the engine on, this time with the digi temp gauge. went all the way up to 99 where she stayed.

1.5 bottles of coolant, thats 6 quarts right there. The cooling system holds 14 quarts, so 1.5 bottles is about all you need to achieve a 50/50 mix. Now fill the rest of the radiator with water.

I got 3 liters of water in, and about 6 liters of coolant. the upper radiator hose is hot, so the tstat is open, temp reads 89 at idle, and hot air comes out of the vents. I also jacks the front end up, but no more goes in.

ill carry a bottle of water with me just incase.

It will take it quite a while to get up to normal temp.. But once it gets there, it should stay.

I did this about 3 weeks ago and it took FOREVER to get the car up to temp. Once it did, it stayed there and everything went smoothly. Just took forever to get the stuff coming out to be perfectly clear.

the bullit archive coolant flush instructions has one big hole in it, they did not include instructions or even mention that you have to BLEED the cooling system of air. failure to do this can cause you to blow a head gasket or crack a head.


At first I posted go read the old thread on this. but then I made a sticky because I hate to see people blow up a motor because of bad instructions. So go read my sticky at the top.
