I posted this same topic on another board, but Im just looking for as many opinnions I can.

Well I guess ill start from the beginning. I was on my way to work in my S/C GT. Im not sure if the mods really matter but Ill go over them. In a nutshell I have a Novi 1000 kit with all the essentials pump, tuned, injectors, MAF. And so forth. Im also running the accufab tb and plenuim, bbk headers and the magna flow catback.

Well I had to drive the stang a few weeks ago in some seriously cold weather do to my winter vehicle being broke. Well Its 5 in the morning and Im on my way to work. It couldnt of been more than 10 degrees outside.

Well I make it 10 min from my house and notice the smell of coolant. I immedietly pull over at the gas station and check it out. The coolant was over flowing from the coolant resevoir. I didnt think much of it and didnt think it was bad because it stopped shortly after.. Now I can also tell you the coolant was not mixed for cold weather ( I had about 70+% water and the rest antifreeze.) So unless I was hearing things it didnt sound like it was flowing right.. Well I decided to continue to drive to work. The coolant gauge never went higher than normal, if anything it was slightly under normal operating temps.

So 10 min later im on the free way when she starts to run rough and developes an odd engine sound. I decide to slow down and pull over. The car than dies... Well she doesnt want to start.. Eventually I get her started back up. And continue to drive to the next gas station to get antifreeze to see if it fixes the problem. Well shes running rough and barely chugging there.

So i get to the gas station.. Check the oil and its empty.. ( So i thought) So i buy 4 quarts of oil and dump it in and add new coolant. I decide the best thing to do is drive back home.. Well I get 2 miles away and she dies. At this point I figured screw it Im getting it towed home.. So I get it towed. Come to find out there is oil all over the side of my engine and under the car and all over the back of my car.

A couple days pass and I decide to look at it. I figured I for sure broke the block or something. So I drained the oil... good GOD!! I have ten quarts in this thing! Come to find out it was never empty on oil.. There was no signs of any metal in the pan which was some relief. I have no idea why it didnt show or I didnt see it on the dipstick at the gas station.

So after that is done I put the oil in a clear jug to check for coolant.. There was none. However I than decided to pull the plugs and crank it over.. Oh boy! Coolant went flying out of the heads.

A friend and I than decided to run a compression check.. The battery was tired but we managed to get only 30 PSi out of one cylinder the number 2 from the passenger side.. we than checked the drivers side and got 0 psi.. We didnt check every cylinder but from the ones we did we knew we had a problem.

Any ideas of what could be wrong here? Did I blow both head gaskets? The motor when i did have it running was fine at idle, no knock or noise of any kind.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the lengthy and confusing story~

Im hoping all it is at the most is heads.. I wont mind buying heads. Any other input? Has anyone actually had this happen.

What puzzles me is how I get coolant in both heads. Its strange

either way something is wrong and your going to have to pull the head. from there you'll find out if its the gasket or you cracked the head.

+1

Has to be a blown gasket or cracked head. You really made things worse though by nearly doubling the amount of oil in the engine.. very bad things happen if you just top an engine off with oil because of the massive amounts of pressure and stress put on the oil pump.

If I go the route and just get new heads.. Figuring this is the problem what do you recommend I buy? I see DSS racing has some that are worked, but Im not sure what they come with for a cam. I would like to just redue the entire drivetrain. Thanks for the input guys.

Merry Christmas

Wow, Dejavu... MAN... I swear your story is almost exactly the same as what happened to my stang. Same weather, same symptoms right down to the engine temp gauge saying normal, everything. Well did you find out what was the problem? I luckily only blew a head gasket, so I replaced both sides, not saying to do the same but I didn't want to take any chances with the head gaskets I bought from the PI swap. I also bought a new thermostat. But since then I haven't had any other engine problems. Good luck man. Hope you don't blow a tranny like I did this winter. lol!

That is weird.. Were you down on compression on all cylinders, and what if I told you this fall I did take out the 3rd gear synchro. lol

Weird

I should hook you up with my wife.. she likes to do the same thing to our cars.. :p

the head gaskets are gone, check to see if the heads are flat and not cracked.

That coolant gauge is useless if the coolant is low, because if the coolant is not reaching the sensor then you will not get a accurate temp reading.. In fact if it starts reading lower than normal that is a sign of trouble. anytime you see coolant bubling out or smell coolant stop driving and get towed..

Just take it apart. With all that coolant in the cylinders I would be worried about a bent rod or cracked piston or ring lands.

Pressure test the cooling system before disassembly but this one will probably require exploratory surgery. Remove both heads and send them to a machine shop that can pressure test them and check the surfaces for straightness. Examine the cylinders for cracks and inspect the block thoroughly for cracks and inspect the freeze plugs carefully.

While the heads are off, check all piston maximum heights so that you can check for a bent or damaged rod.

Henceforth, since you must live in a colder climate, given that you cited 10 degrees ambient temperature (I can only assume that you mean Farenheit) run a 50% anti freeze mixture.

Good luck,
