i have found a 1992 lx 5.0 convertible im interested in. what was the correct speedometer in these? is it 140 or were they 85? what was 85, just convertibles? 4 cylinder cars? they have a motorsports 160 in it, and he said it had a 85 ... i was trying to determine if its a real 5.0 car or a 4 cylinder conversion? can you run the vin number for the correct motor? any way of telling if it was an original 4 cylinder car?
thanks

For 1992

V8 = 140MPH speedo

2.3L 4-banger 85MPH speedo

You can tell by the VIN as well. 8th digit...original V8 would be "E"

Sounds like a 4-banger swap...probwith incorrect mileage as well

mileage is unsure the 160 speedo was never hooked up. can you see 4 cylinder in the vin or if it doesnt have an E then it was a 4 cylinder?
thanks.

Just look at the VIN. If it's not an E for the 8th digit, it was a 4-banger. There are only two options for that year, i forget what letter was the code for 4-banger.

ALl the vin tells you is body style, plant of manufacturer and engine.

If you want to know transmission, look at the door tag.

160 was an ssp speedo. Like mentioned before is not original to the car. The vin is the only definitive way to tell what the car is. A thorough v8 swap will remove any indicative hardware.
