I am counting down the days until I pick this baby up, but my question is that in a few people's sigs they have automatics. Is the auto better than the standard on the GT? Its to late for me now because it has just finished being built, but I am wondering if the overall performance is better? The other question is that the specc of the GT says 300 hp. Is it safe to assume all 300 doesnt make it to the wheels. And if it doesnt how much actually makes it there on average. (completely stock btw)

The manuals get about 260hp to the wheels, while the automatics get about 240hp to the wheels, give or take 5-10hp. The automatics really wake up with an aftermarket stall converter. Both really perk up with a tune, gears, and CAI. Both transmissions are great choices since 2005, unlike older generations that featured performance-robbing automatics.

I remember a couple of articles that claimed the manual car would run a 1/4 mile at 13.5 to 13.9 seconds and an auto would do 13.9 to low 14's. The torque converter does swallow up some HP. My '05 was an automatic in '05 but I changed it over after about a year to a manual. (They wouldn't deal on manual cars back in '04 soon after releasing these cars.)

My experience was I really loved the automatic. It was the best feeling/shifting auto I've ever felt especially with a tune. You'll love the quick 1-2-3 shifts. Get a set of gears and a CAI/tune and that auto will wake up big time.

I have had both. my old car had an auto it was an 02gt. i loved that car. it was fast for what it was. I put 4.10 on it and it was great. my brother in-law has an ss camaro, and he loved to drive my car with the 4.10. i would really suggest that you get 4.10. the mpg is still good. i would have to say that i do miss being able to just mash the peddle and go. the auto really can be fun cars,my understanding is the new auto are better than the one i had. yes as people said the drive train loss will be more on the auto. but with mods i would not worry to much. now i just bought a bullitt about a month ago. i do like the stick shift. i dont think you can go wrong, these are really fun cars. have fun with your car.

Congrats on your S197 GT purchase!
As other have suggested, it's highly recommended that you install a tune and CAI. They will really wake it up. Also suggest that you get a BamaChips tune. Doug is a tuning wizard with auto equipped S197 GT's. His 93 octane Race tune is a screamer. I use it with my manual 05 S197 GT, and I have never looked back.

Well comming from someone with an Auto and the Bamachips tune with a CAI and 4:10s ...all I can say is FUN FUN !!! At WOT its freaking insane ! But ...I do miss the shifting of gears ! ....(alot..LOL)

personally, I've always rolled with a stick. I had a g-body (cutlass type car) w/a built th350 auto, and I took 3k of my hard earned money and did a custom manny tranny swap. Autos are good for traffic, consistancy @ the track and wat not, but the stick is so much more driver involved = more fun imo. If a car has an option of both trannies, i'll always choose the stick, UNLESS the time of which i drive changes (traffic). my .02

I had an 07 auto previously, then got bored with it and bought this 09 manual. Both are good. The automatic yielded much more impressive/noticable results with the CAI/tuner combo. If you have a stock auto, my advice is to get a CAI and race tune from Bama Chips. It completely transformed that car.

a real nice done up auto can be a ton of fun. every car that i've owned that i've driven has been manual. the auto in these cars are really good compared to the old autos in stangs.

with a tuner like bamachips he can change the shift points and shift firmness and all i'm pretty sure and make it shift like a bat out of hell. i got a stick in this car and my others just because for everyday driving, i like shifting and then slammin gears is fun as hell once and a while.

not everyone can drive stick and not everyone wants to drive stick so they op for the auto. one of my teachers in high school had about 12 cars or so all muscle cars. i think maybe 1-2 were stick. he bracket races alot but loves autos.

i really like that new TCI shifter that came out for the autos, if i bought an auto that would be the first thing i would do.
