Couple questions about 90lx 2.3

Just got a 90 lx convertible. Put a new top on it. Now I want to look at the 2.3 in it. It sounds like crap. Runs good, but sounds bad.. What do you recommend to improve the sound or is it a lost cause? Some tell me not to dump the 2.3 for a 5.0, but my kids say otherwise.

Here's a question. What is a fox everyone is talking about?

ok...it's runs good...but sounds bad?? does the exhaust sound bad....what sounds bad?? and if it runs good and you can find what the "noise" is and fix it. then why not keep the 4 banger and build it up one day??

as far as the fox body .....i have no idea why.....but..i think from 79-93 was the foxy body style and 94-98 was the sn95.

The 79-93 Mustangs were nick-named "Fox" bodies. The 94-up chassis was called the "Fox-4".

What exactly sounds bad? I mean, 2.3's have a weird sound that is kind of an aquired taste.

Thanks for the quick reply.. Let me explain what I mean. The thing sounds dead. as in no power.. It may have a few exhaust leaks but sounds real tired.. 130,000 miles suppose it should. My 14 year old will have to live with it.
I think I will keep the 4cyl. the way it was explained to me was like this.
Years ago everyone wanted a vw bug. They all wanted to make a baja out of them. Now days the origional vw bugs are hard to find. They tell me that will be the case with the 2.3 mustang. Everyone wants 5.0. Now if this is true, time wil tell.

One more question. I had a new convert top put on and now I need to put oil in the hydraulic system of the top. Anyone know the procedure for this?

Well, it probably sounds "dead" because it is a convertible. The convertibles were the slowest mustangs, 5.0 or 2.3. Does it have an automatic or a 5 speed?

There's not much you can do with the stock 2.3L really, especially if it's an automatic. You can do some little bolt ons but they don't really help all that much.

As for the volkswagen bugs....I don't think originals are hard to find because people made bajas out of them, I'd say they're hard to find because they either rusted out or got wrecked or were otherwise junked. My friend in high school had a Baja bug and that thing was a money pit, the engine blew up two or three times.

For your hydraulic question. You need to go in the trunk and pull out the rear lining right underneath where the top folds down in. Next there should be a little black motor there with a wiring harness and two hoses running from. Disconnect the wiring harness and unscrew both lines off with a wrench and plug them with your fingers. Pullout the motor (it may or may not be bolted to the car) and when you pull it out there should be a plug in the motor where you can add the fluid. And the fluid you need is simple ATF (Auto tranny fluid)

As far as I know thats all I had to do on my 91 vert, but I could be all wrong. Hope I could help some.

However I don't really think the fluid needs to be changed unless the motor was replaced as well and it is empty
