Cowl Cover Question

Wow, touchy aren't we? I don't know what other New Englanders have been talking down to who else about what but it hasn't been me. Maybe your Dad has a point ya think? Maybe like myself he's just looking out for your best interest. You have like 6 posts, you talk like you're in your teens and thinking your bullet proof and also like your dad, I've been there too. You did not ask a technical question but my advice was sound none the less but since it is merely the truth and not what you want to hear I am not surprised that it was dismissed so readily. Sorry you took offense to it but it was not a cheap shot at all. Maybe it's just because my car was totaled a while back by some fast and furious kid with the same attitude that I'm trying to sway you but some folks just need to make thier own mistakes in order to learn and that is fine, I just pray you don't learn the hard way like this kid did. I'm sure his eyes will be clearer when he gets out though and his parents may even have a house for him to live in again by then, who knows.
Best of luck to you, get back to me in 20 years or so when you have kids ready to drive and let me know how you feel about it then.

Hey man, it's all love. To be honest, I appreciated the underlying meaning of your message and I completely understand where you are coming from. I just did not appreciate your tact; i.e. your delivery. Your message was very condescending(think about it man….your comments implied my death…). I've been building cars for 15 years. I started with a '72 Dodge Dart, moved to a '66 Chrysler Newport, and now that I have seen the light, a '70 Mustang Grande. My comments about doing 100 mph were meant in jest-especially since all I see is foreign made sports cars in my area. I have no inclination, nor the desire to endanger myself, nor anybody else driving on the interstate that fast. I apologize for my comments as well. I should not have retorted. The dynamics associated with my comments only made matters worse. Furthermore, the fact that you lost a car really made me commiserate your particular situation. I only have 6 posts because I just bought a Mustang and as a consequence, just applied for an account. I have taken your advice and appreciate your concerns. I’ll watch what I say on this board from now on. Be blessed.
For everybody else, I begin fabrication on my cowl covers this weekend. I'll post a picture when I finish.

Hey no harm no fowl, you're right, it's all love. My delivery was meant in jest also just so you wouldn't think I was being harsh on you, geostang seemed to know where I was coming from but maybe a different smiley would have helped portray that.
Anyway, to get back on topic, just so you know, despite some of the horror stories you may have seen and read about the lengthy and costly process of cowl repair, this applies mainly to the 68 and older crowd, we 69/70 folk have it quite easy and DIY friendly in comparrison. If you catch it in time it can likely be fixed almost as easily as custom making a cover (which I look forward to seeing pic's on BTW).
Oh and so you know, the car was merely totaled but not lost, I'm fixing it at any cost, it's like a friend I'm just not willing to lose yet. You should stop by 69stang.com (70's too) sometime and check out the resto, with a little luck she'll be seeing the road next month for the first time in almost 2 years.

So I took looked a little deeper, removed the parking brake mechanism and poured water down the cowl. It came pouring out of the lower side vent. Took the vent off and it was just nasty... So was the parking brake mechanism.

I can't say where as I am aware of the grommet you are seeking, but I'll bet I know why it is leaking there. The water is probably not draining as it should be so that is where it found a place to go. All water caught in the cowl is supposed to drain behind either side of the front wheels. There is a small channel in the sheet metal that is maybe a little wider in diameter than a pencil. not only do these usually trap debree in an out door car, but from the momment they left the factory many were faulty. The fender and seam seal was done so quickly during assembly that many of them just got covered right over. Now you see why this combined with a bare metal cowl lead to them rusting out completely. Yours appears to have been doing this for a long time and had it not escaped here then likely the cowl would be rotted.
I have a similar problem with the cowl, and the PO actually replaced it but just did a piss poor job. It still leaks a little under extreme rain storms. My solution untill the cowl cover arrives?
Plastic bag, handles wrapped around the windshield wipers, and the other end tucked under the hood. No, its not the best cowl cover, but yes it works

LOL. New Sadie came with a cowl cover and that leaks.
I need to get my butt to the store and buy some new weather stripping. Until then, I just put a trash bag on the driver's side floor. When I get in to drive, I pick up the bag, dump the water out, and throw it in the back seat. When I get back home, I put it back in the driver's side floor.Luckily the cowl isn't really horrible (few pea-sized holes on driver's side only) so I'm hoping I can patch it from under the dash when I start on the interior in a month or so rather than pull the whole front end of the car apart.

Cupid; glad you took the time to pull that cowl. You would have been really pissed if you spent the time and money to fab something and still had the leak. Now get to work and fix that rust you found. Also, be sure to find out why it is draining properly and fix that, (could be clogged with debris).Similar threads
