Hello, my best friend lives and dies with volkswagens. They are great because the parts are so interchangeable from year to year and they are very easy to work on.

they get traded in at my toyota dealer often and i think every one has been wholesaled because it needed too much work to be able to sell for anything resembling a profit for the dealer

very expensive to fix, and fix it you will!!

they are also agonizingly slow with the 2 point slow

there are countless better options for a DD, especially for the money that jettas somehow still pull

my buddy bought one that turned out to be a lemon...needless to say he ended up gettin his money back for that p.o.s.

more or less, yes. they suck.

what kind of budget are you working with? I see all types of cars every day at work and can tell you what some of the better ones are that ive seen.

My friends sister had a 2004 bug and when the battery died she had to get the computer reprogramed. Sounds like a bunch of bull**** to me but she is nice to look at so i sat there and listened anyways. Power windows wouldnt even work till she got it reprogramed, and it was an 1100 dollar bill. Who designes a car like that?

Try to find (if you can ) 2000 volvo S40 ( they changed the body style after a couple of years and the price went up ) but a 2000 S40 (first year they came out ) are 1.8 liter great gas milage ,and all are turboed ,and fun to drive (sheep in wolf's ) all have nice interiors ,and are plentiful .Very quick little volvo's ..just my .02..Volvo's low-pressure turbo package and an electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission.


There out there ,and cheap !.

I always liked the Volkswagen Scirocco ,but there hard to fine .

That can be a tough market...with the price of gas, the smaller more economical cars that were once 2-3k are now 4-5k and its interesting the junk that occupies that ~4k range. Its not impossible though.

I bought my 96 Volvo 850 for 2500 bucks...176k miles on it and its got a few minor issues but has been a solid and comfortable daily driver for 7 months and 12k miles now and ive only put a couple hundred bucks into it, most of that was a control arm that i had to replace due to a bad ball joint.

not sure what you are looking for in a car but 4k will get you a decent late 90's corolla or civic, i like nissan sentras myself, or even an altima, camry or accord. all of those are FAR better choices than the jetta. for a cheap but reliable, though less refined ride, check out a ford escort/zx2. i had one that i got for 3500 and 71k miles and never put a dime into it other than oil changes. zx2 is fun to drive with the 5spd but small. GREAT on gas though.

Also to consider is maybe a small 2wd pickup...good commuters and lots of utility! pick up stang parts with it! the only ones in the 4k range are going to be older and/or american trucks like rangers or S10's, the older japanese ones fall into that range but nothing really after 2000.

good luck and check out some cars that you maybe hadnt thought of before. i was pleasantly surprised with my volvo...i never thought id own a volvo, but here i am. there are lots of good cars out there, look around and youll find the right one

if you're looking into the vw's make sure you stay away from the cars with automatics. they are supposedly filled with a fluid that Volkswagen claims doesnt need to be changed during the lifetime of the car. this is not true i know people who have not changed the fluid and ended up with major transmission issues around 100k miles. The other thing is that you cant just go to autozone and pick up a couple quarts of mercon/ dexron to use the trans, you have to buy a special type of fluid only sold through a dealer that is $20 a quart.

the VW2.0 burns oil. nothing big but it does use it. about a qurst every oil change. I had a 01 golf. loved it, great car.

I saw a brand new scirocco on the freeway the other day. was kinda of weird. I didnt know what it was at first but I saw the VW on it. pulled up and it was badged with a scirocco.
