Dash to 300 H.P.

I would watch out with that 86 bottom end, there are head/cam comboes that don't work on it.

I think if your planning to stay non mass air, go with GT40s or 40Ps (explorer motor would be perfect to snag), stock HO cam, Cobra/Explorer/GT40 intake, all the bolt ons (TB, Pulleys, exhaust, AFPR). toss in a 3.55-4.10 gear and a T5 with a solid shifter and clutch and you should have a quick car.

My point exactly. Good power an no need for mass air.:nice:

You guys are overlooking the fact that he will be running the stock 86 pistons if he runs his shortblock. To answer your question, NO you cannot just bolt the Gt-40 or Gt-40p heads on your current shortblock. This swap is difficult for you for a few reasons. Right now you are speed density, which does not work well with higher lift cams. This means horrible driveability and fuel economy. You said you did not want that...so putting a heads, cam, intake combo on your car's current bottom end is not the right direction.

The explorer engine swap with Mass air and mustang computer is your best bet. However, like someone else mentioned before you put the motor in you should definitely swap in a better cam and you MUST change the stock valve springs. You should be able to do this swap for under 2 grand. Long tubes or FRPP shorties are your best bet for exhaust...shorties will obviously be cheaper as you wont need to buy a mid pipe with it. And you will stay emissions legal!

Then you need to deal with the tranny. I think a shift kit and 4.10s with a trac lock rebuild would be the cheapest and simplest way to up the tranny performance. But you should really look into getting a converter at the same time. Try to stay away from the OTS pieces and get something custom made for your application. It may be a little more money...but in the end you will get a converter specifically stalled for your application and it will drastically improve the performance and feel of you car.

If you spend 3 grand on this swap you will be running much faster than a Hemi Charger in all aspects. And you driveability, throttle response, and fuel economy will likely get better as well. Good luck man

ninety15.0 his short block was not overlooker. It was clearly stated in a earlier post that his pistons would not work with this set up. As for mass air, he will not need it with the factory 87-93 ho cam that has been suggested. Im not tryin to step on your dick but I don't want the OP to get confused.

It wont destroy it, it simply wont work if the pistons and valves come into contact. You would check this before bolting anything down for good, and if they do hit, you need to either notch them, or buy new ones. Your best bet is to find a stock short block out of a newer car, or a complete explorer motor.

That right there is why i said what i had said. I know that someone said he couldnt use his shortblock...but he kept mentioning the use of Gt-40s on his current combo...and no one explicitly told him NO. Except now 25th has cleared that up for us. No you cannot just toss gt-40's on your 86 shortblock.

Best (cheapest) option is the exploder complete engine.

In order to attain the HP required you'll need more than GT40 heads and a cam regarless of how good the tuner is. Your best bet is SC the car or NOS inorder to attain the 300 plus mark. Pistons will limit your cam selection and SD will likely cause issues with any cam that would be required to make use of a decent set of heads like AFR TW and or Eddy. Switching to mass air would be ideal for a head/cam swap...not absolutely necessary, but as I can attest to the car CAN become a nightmare to drive on the streets if the car doesn't like the new components. I would suggest you re-evaluate what you want from the car simply because 'as is' your quest is going to be quite involved and expensive (2000-3000) to attain your stated goal.

Everybody covered all your options. They did a good job.

I just want to second ninety5.0 on the stall converter. With an AOD, this is a must to get you out of the hole. 4.10's is a hell of a rear end gear for a take off, but it won't shift into 4th. I don't know how fast you will race until, but I had to let off the gas for the trans to shift to 4th gear.

I really hope you pull it off man, I hate Chargers with their little HEMI badges. I had one try and race me in the notchback. I declined because I would get smoked.

GT40s will toss down 300... Ours did 292 on a 100 degree day in my dads car, 185 in my brothers, stock cammed, cobra intake. A lot of guys I know run GT40 comboes (per racing rules in our club) and most were 290-320 to the tires, on stock bottem ends, with stock cams. It takes a little to the heads to do it, but is something the average guy can accomplish.

They are a nice cheap head to run, and idk what kind of power your looking for, but 260 to the tire will run 12s on a street tire, or so I have been "told" :D.

i figured mid 13's...i dont expect that car to break the 13's and remember im not looking for a radical drag mustang..my main goal for my car is making a all around decent performer that i can love with and drive years from now cause its my main source of transportationa, a daily driver in rain snow dirt road or paved road.. and now and the autoxing from time to time..

these are my goals in a nut shell

speed.....mid 13's
handeling... .94 g's
breaking ...60-0 -under 125FT

oh and i hate that fuel cutoff i want that off...Thats it i dont think im asking for really radical goals

You hate the fuel cutoff at 6250. I dont think you need to be revving a stock HCI car that high. 5250 tops.

But if you really want to take the limiter off...you are going to need some sort of J3 port tuner (tweecer / PMS) or a custom tune. Thats another 500 bucks.

Best bet is still the explorer motor swap with some tranny work. That will get you to your goals. Probably around 2500 bucks if you search for deals! Good luck man

Not being a flamer at all....but.....Why do you say 5250?? Are you talking about your car, or all 302's. My 91 notch is stock beside MAC catback and O/R H pipe. My car pulls strong high and I shift each gear at 5,900 while racing/messing around.

ok well thats what has to be done then... i just hate to let a good low mile engine like mine go to waste

You don't necessarily have to let it go to waste. If you can afford to buy new pistons and put them in, you can go that route and end up better in the end since you can bump your compression with new pistons, which will help a lot with better heads.

yea maybe your right ...ill maybe i should drive my car done to fla and work on the pistons my pops enjoy stuff like that anyways...god father and son time....for the mean time get a little realible camry lol.... i dont know id have to think cause i love my baby
