Degreeing A Cam

when installing a new cam is it necessary to degree it? or can i just line up the timing marks on sprokets while at TDC?

If you really want to ensure installation accuracy, yes...... you need to degree it. Otherwise, you may end up with a cam installed anywhere in a ±4° window (advance or retarded).
