What does it take to make a Tremec 3550 swap? Bellhousing and crossmember mods? Another post in talk a guy said a different clutch and slip yoke? I thought that was just for the TKO? I figured about $1,500-$1,600 for the swap (1,200 tranny-135 bellhousing + shipping and I'm sure other things that would come up.) Any info? Reason I ask is I got a new motor that's ready to drop in and I don't think the T5 will last the way I drive down the track. Thanks.

http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=429162 seeeearch search search search. I was pretty pissed off when i typed this. It was something of a PITA, but not really as bad as it sounds now that i look back on it.

BTW, all in all, the list of parts at the top of that page cost about $1950.00, probably closer to 2k after the pins and bolts that were missing that i bought from Ford. Also, if you buy a new 3550 it comes with a shifter, you just need to put an arm and ball on it. It's not the smoothest shifting shifter, but it'll do if you're on a budget untill you can get a nice Pro 5.0

Remember, if your using a stock clutch and flywheel now, then you should upgrade to the 10.5 stuff which would require a new flywheel and clutch. A 3550 uses the same input and output so you dont have to change your clutch or driveshaft for that reason. Its a simple swap to do and can be done for less than $1500 if your flywheel and clutch are in good shape still.

You will need a bellhousing. Aluminum one is available from Tremec, or a SFI bullet proof steel is available from Mcleod, Ford Racing(Which is actually a Mcleod one) or Lakewood. You will need a different clutch disc & pressure plate since the TREMEC uses a differen't input shaft spline (1 1/8x26). You need to modify the crossmember.
Grind out the weld beads on the old one and adjust the crossmember bushing holders until the Tremec does not rub the crossmember. Then weld them in place. ( I recomend changing the crossmember bushing's while you are at it with some Energy Susp. ones) Or you can buy an adjustable crossmember from Ford Racing that will work. The slip yoke is different than the T5 but one comes with the tranny anyhow, at least one did with my TKO. A shifter comes with the tranny, you just have to you your old lever and knob. Stock drivshaft work's just fine as well. If you use a steel bellhousing you may need a longer cluth fork as well to keep a softer clutch feel. Stock one will work but is more stiff. Otherwise it is a very simple install.

He is getting a 3550, which like stated above, uses the stock style 10 spline clutch and the stock driveshaft yoke

Sorry I was thinking TKO again man. You are right though the 3550 is stock spline. My opinion is though if you can afford it go with the TKO cause the price diiference for the tranny themselves isn't a whole lot. It's just going to cost you to buy bellhousing, clutch etc.
