would detunning the 351 with a stock cam and 30# injectors gain back some economy? and would the gain be significant or minute? reason i ask is because i'll be commuting over a hundred miles a day when i transfer to my next university.

whell, i see no need to change injectors assuming your car is running ideal, the 42's should be dialed back alot as-is and the a/f ratio should be the same with 42's or 30's.

I dont know how big of a cam you have, BUT i think with that engine your not going to get GREAT economy, but as long as its in a good state of tune and you keep the engine in its efficiency range you will be good.

My car gets damn near 20mpg, that was with 3:73's....however i know you got a larger displacement.

my tune is decent enough, pretty close i would say. the cam is 236/248 579/579.

to be honest dude id just look into picking up an early to mid 90's civic hatch, or a 1st gen integra or something along those lines for next to nothing. My reasoning is these cars are going to be more "willing" to travel those distances daily and you will be less inclined to fix miniscule thigns that go wrong on your beater than the stang...not to mention the money you will have to spend in just average up-keep on a Stang to drive it those distances....

i didn't really think about the maintenance end of keeping the car up. i guess you are right, that might be my cheapest route. i hate the thought of driving something like that, but i guess i'll have to bite the bullet and get some rice .
thanks

eh, dont be so closed minded about the Hondas...those cars were built to commute....not to mention i know a bunch of mid 90's civic hatches that would walk my stang like it wasnt moving...

I'd go that route too. My 4900 pound truck has a 351W in it, the best I've gotten for MPG was 18-19 really really babying it. The cam in it is supposedly the same as a 95 Mustang GT, I still have E7 Heads and a stock intake, cam and computer.

I've noticed the 351 is more RPM sensitive with the gas mileage than my 306 in my Cobra. The Cobra will get 20-22 regardless of 60 MPH or 80 MPH. The 351 drops several MPG if revved over 2000 for cruising speed. It putters along at 1600 RPM cruising at 65 MPH in overdrive and seems happy. (gotta love low-end torque).

Your cam is gonna really hurt your mileage too. Not to mention throttle input! lol.

I bought my truck as a daily driver not for mileage but to keep miles off the Cobra and not have to worry about breaking my d/d at the strip. It now sees duty towing the 'Stang a lot after buying a trailer too...

i noticed the same thing also about being rpm sensitive. i have made datalogs of runs on 60 mph roads and the mileage is great 19-21 but as soon as i am at 75-80 on the interstate it drops to about 14-15 with a very light right foot.
