Ok back to the Mustang.

Since the head swap job involves moving the ac compressor and lines it’s always a chance to mess things up so I tested it today on the way home from work. When I got back in the garage I put a thermometer in the vent. Working good.

This is with 84 degrees ambient

I have coolant leaking from the timing cover to block gasket. Not alot but I don’t like it. Damn should’ve redone the timing cover when I was right there. Duh!

Well that sucks man. I hate doing the timing chain cover because of the whole pan gasket BS.

I have the one piece felpro rubber with steel core pan gasket and it’s leak free. I’m hoping to just loosen the pan bolts enough to make the pan dip ever so slightly and get it done without removing the pan or damaging the gasket. Do you think I have a chance at success with this idea?

I’ve discovered I only needed to remove the face bracket for the ac/ps to get enough access instead of moving the whole lot. I shouldn’t have to move the blower/ alt stuff at all.

Pretty cool you can do all that without removing the s/c'r bracket. That thing is a pain to get in by yourself.

I’m going to separate the pump from the timing cover before I reassemble. My plan is to use some shorter bolts with washers and cinch the cover to the block and walk away for a day so the rtv on that part sets up fully. Then remove those shorter bolts and finish up installing the pump to the cover. This way it will be done in stages instead of having sealer getting messed up or partially settling if I were trying to handle all the layers all at once. I plan to practice getting the cover down into the pan area properly before using gaskets and sealer. It just looks tricky and problematic trying to do everything all at the same time.

Actually it’s not that big of a pain moving the sc bracket if you move it as an assembly. But if I don’t need to move it at all, even better

I’m pretty sure it was originally one piece. I’ll have to look closer to see if that radius piece separated. If so I’ll have to decide on reusing it with a dabble of silicone on the ends. That or do the same with the rubber radius seal that came in the timing cover kit.

I’m pretty sure another one piece pan gasket can be done in the future without disturbing the timing cover gasket if needed. So for now I might as well try and make it work.

The radius part did separate. It was a pretty clean break. Here’s the original next to the replacement from the timing cover kit. I like the original better because it’s slightly more pliable and also slightly thicker.

For the sealer I’ll be using RTV grey.
