Just purchased a used hurst billet-plus shifter via internet, It is for my 85 GT. When I first put it in, it grinded almost every shift to 3rd and 4th. After driving for about 20 minutes it seems to be shifting well in all but 4th. It grinds almost everytime shifting into 4th . I had no grinding with the stock shifter. Will backing off the shift stops help? Maybe I set them too tight against the shifter.

You bought a hurst shifter, so yes you bought a bad shifter
Buy yourself a tri ax or pro 5.0 and set the stops with a feeler guage, whatever you do dont back them off if they are set correctly that will make them useless
good luck, in my experience hurst shifters are junk...least on a t5

back off your stops. My MGW says put it in gear screw in the stop till it hits the shifter shaft then back out 4 full turns. I think 4 turns is a little muc.h I'm going to try 2-3 but I might find that it will be needed to be at 4 who knows.

on the MGW just back it out 1 turn, that's odd im pretty sure my MGW instructions said back out 1 full turn. If your going to junk the hurst i would highly recommend the MGW nothing but good things from mine.

Mine might say 1 full turn but I thought it was 4. I guess I was right about thinking it was a little much. And they are a kick ass shifter.

Remember, there was a time when there was no other shifter than a hurst for a 5.0 mustang. The original worked great, it was a little weak, and that knob had alot of vibration, but for it's time it did the job. The billet is an improvement.
Likely just your shifter stops.

Nope, the Hurst Competition Plus Shifters are garbage, theres a reason they started making the billet plus. In 1 year my shifter wouldn't work with my new G-Force Tranny (grinded every gear and hard to get into 2nd).
Pulled the shifter and took it apart. Wouldn't you know the cast aluminum housing where the shifter ball moves was all worn out and out of spec. Put my stock one back in and problem went away.

I think the billet shifters are an improvement because of the harder metal used. The old comp. plus cast is crapola.

Ok guys, I'll try backing the stops back a turn or so..also, on the hurst, the stick is mounted on the passenger side of the shifter..I would think unbolting it and moving it to the drivers side would improve the feel and reach (with the stubby handle).

That's personal preference on the handle. I used to love my competition plus handle.

Blk, i'm aware it's outdated now, and has been since like 95 or so, but back in the day, it was the "to have" shifter. I switched to the pro 5.0, and now with the tko i have a Tri ax.

Which was the reason I purchased it new in the first place. But for it to wear out within 5,000 miles was pretty pathetic. Pro 5.0 took its place with pride.
