diff fluid?

How often are you supposed to change diff fluid? Is it difficult to do?
what about tranny fluid?

15-30k miles is a good time. i do mine every year. its fairly easy you take off the rear cover, let everything drain out, then clean out inside with paper towels and brake cleaner, then put the cover back on and fill. i use Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. for the tranny, just drain and fill, use a synthetic ATF, Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoi,l etc. they are all good.

every 30k and use a 75/140 full synthetic diff lube. I switched up to full synthetic in my tranny aswell and it falls under the every 30k too.

since we are on the subject...is it normal to have a little bit of metal shavings in the diff fluid after a gear install. or should i have a talk with the guy that put them in. sorry to jack the thread.

uh, hmm sure its normal *cough* *bs* *cough*?? how big are the chips? did your carrier show any signs of damage or excessive wear? mine did. how soon after the change? or was it found during the change?

mening did you have new gears put in and am now doing a service and have found metal flakes just now?

It is normal to have same metal shavings or flakes. as long as there are no chunks of metal you are fine. I suggest using royal purple gear lube, there is no nead to add friction modifier with it.

i checked it when i changed my oil couple days ago. just a few little pieces, like a dust, on the plug magnet. the guy that did my install said everything looked ok in the case. car only had 73k on it when i put them in. im guessing the car was unabused as it was completely stock when i got it. im going to change it soon and take a look at the inside of the diff.

depends on the dealer. this is something to just do on your own. a dealer could charge anywhere from $50 to $130 to do this.

Put Royal Purple in mine when I changed out the girdle. It already has the friction modifier in it and it takes 2 quarts.

They are bearing cap supports. See the 4 big nuts holding the carrier in. They put pressure or support to the caps that hold in the carrier and keeps it from twisting during hard take offs.

Mobile One

I see Royal Purple has friction modifier in it. Does anyone know if you have to add the friction modifier if you use Mobile One gear oil?

One word of caution. Make sure you can remove your fill plug before you drain your diff fluid. It takes a 3/8 drive extention to remove the plug. These plugs will can be hard to remove if they've been in for awhile. Pearl02.

Thanks Pearl, but I'm getting gears installed soon and I'm just trying to get all my parts and fluids in order. I have FRPP 4.10 gear, Ratech install kit and Mobile One lube. Now, I'm worried about the friction modifier. I know Ford sells it, but is this a regular item that parts stores carry?

Chimchim, you can buy the friction modifier at any parts store. It should say on the bottle something like "will work on Ford posi/limited slip rearends". I bought some from advanced auto for my Mazda B4000 pickup a couple of years ago. I don't remember the brand but it works great. Pearl02.
