In order to be in compliance with the law, the repair manual is correct. Refrigerant needs to be recovered, not released into the atmosphere. If you're not worried about a hefty fine if busted doing it (if memory serves me correctly, it's around $20,000), just hook the hose on the low side and open the valve. It'll all blow out and you'll have a discharged system.

Isn't that what I said in the very first reply in this thread? Although, R134a is a HFC refrigerant, so it's supposed to be environmentally friendly, unlike R12, which isn't very kind to the ozone being a CFC...
R-134a (tetrafluoroethane) has no affect on ozone; however, it traps heat more than carbon dioxide and it's very poisonous. R-134a was developed once CFCs (R-12) were being phased out.
