Distributor gear removal

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'm trying to get the distributor gear and collar off the shaft. I have removed both pins out of the gear and collar but neither will budge. Is there some secret to doing this that I am missing or what? Please help, Thanks.

I tapped mine off with one end on a 2 by 4 and used a soft rubber mallet

buddy of mine just did a couple of them. he used a bearing splitter.

Primer, as described earlier, you'll need a bearing puller for the gear. The collar will be sort of stuck due to buildup under it. Use a screwdriver to wedge between the collar and housing(gently) to try to move it down a little, then back up. It'll come free if you work it up and down a little, being careful not to put pressure on the outer edges which will probably break it. The bad news is with the gear. It's soft/brittle and will break/crack easily. When you try to replace it, be absolutely certain that it is aligned with the pin hole in the shaft because turning it after it's that far up the shaft is close to impossible without destroying it. There is a tool made especially for this project, sorry but the link to it escapes me at the moment. Do a seach through Google, you'll most likely find it. If I run across it, I'll post it. I can't swear to how good/bad it works, just stubbled over it one day while performing the same job you're doing. Good luck with it!

alright awesome....I got them off with a crankshaft dampner puller, c-clamp, vice and a wrench. Now I just have to get them back on...oh well...I guess patience is the key.
