I'm finishing the restoration of my '69 Mach 1. It'll have a 351W with a Weiand Stealth intake, Holley Street Avenger 670cfm carb, Comp Cams 262H cam, Hooker longtube headers, Magnaflow exhaust and 3.8 rearend.

I'm starting to get the parts together for the ignition system. I'll probably go with an MSD 6A box and a Blaster2 coil. Should I stick with an MSD dizzy?? Or perhaps go with Crane or Mallory?? Vacuum or mechanical advance??

The car will strictly be a weekend street car.

I use a stock duraspark, its the same thing basically as the MSD dizzy, only cheaper, It works on my 68 bracket reacer and my daily driver, In conjunction with a MSD box you got one heck of a Igntion system.

i'd say it really depends on what RPM you turn the motor. less than 6 grand and a re-curved duraspark would be fine. MSD, Mallory and Crane all make really nice E-curve dizzies though that are so easy to tune it's almost ridiculous. basically it comes down to personal choice.

Points distributor, Pertronix unit (or any other conversion module) small to large cap adapter and post type cap, Ford racing 9mm wires, hot coil of choice. Good up to 7500 rpms. Way cheaper than going with an all out MSD system.

duraspark will turn more than 6 grand, I turn mine 8 grand. It uses the same magnetic pickup as a msd. stay away from the mallory unispark, it sucks.

not saying the duraspark won't work at all turning that high but spark scatter becomes more of a problem over 6k not because of the pickup but because of teh dizzy housing using one bushing. the MSD units usually use at least 2 bushings if not bearings and don't have the spark scatter problem. not even all duraspark dizzies will have the problem but you can't tell which will and which won't

I got what your saying, I just recomended the duraspark unit cause its affordable and it works, I found this out only after having bad problems with a mallory, so installed the duraspark in a pinch, Its never been replaced since.

in his application i'm sure the duraspark will be fine but other people will likely read this thread too and may have a need for the higher revving capability of an aftermarket unit.

Looks like I'll try using it with my current Duraspark dizzy then and see how it goes.

How does the MSD box hook up to the Duraspark?? I was reading the MSD 6A instructions and it says I need a certain cable (MSD8860).....

Why does the uni-lite suck? I'm looking for a new one with ajustable advance curves.

i've been running a uni-lite for years with no real problems. i did have a problem back in the early 90's with some bad modules but that was apparently because of a bad batch from the factory, once they got that straightened out i haven't had a problem with mine since then

Same thing with My Unilite. Had a problem in the early 90's with the module, replaced it and no problems since.

My car sat for a long time but has always fired right up and I havent even changed the plugs yet.

Mallory also sells the magnetic pickup dizzys too, I was curious if one was better than the other

I would get the 6AL box, it gives you a rev limiter. Its just a nice safety feature... you know... just in case =)

MSD drop in and go. It will hook right up with what you already have and it's easier to curve to your engine. Only thing to add is to get the MSD distributor hold down. Much better piece than the ford stuff.
