I was taking to a kid at a car show yesterday who's got a 95 Cobra. He said he just installed Twisted wedge heads, FRPP cam and a bigger MAF and his car runs like Sh@t. He also has a Andersons PMS for tuning. He claims that the 95 computers suck so bad it hates to be modded. Ive heard the same thing a few time before and was thinking about swapping out the computer. The only problem is Iv'e heard of peaple who swap them out and see no difference, so whats the deal? Also FRPP basically sells a 95 Cobra engine rated at 285hp, Why is my piece of sh@t only rated at 240hp. Just needed to vent

Is that to the wheels or flywheel?

There must be something different. Different camshaft or different cylinder heads would be my guess. Maybe X-heads?

Gotta be flywheel. They wouldn't sell an engine for RWHP, cause it would look less powerful. Also, if they guaranteed a certain rwhp, they would be screwed because everyone's ride is slightly different, and the dyno results would merit rebates, returns, etc. Assuming 17 percent drivetrain loss on a manual as the standard, a 285 flywheel motor would produce roughly 237 rwhp. I think this is reasonable as the advertised flywheel HP of the 95 Cobra has been notoriously underrated at 240.

The 94/95 computers don't suck. They are faster and have more features than the 93 and earlier computers. The problem is that the calibration is pretty tight, and not very tolerant of mods to the cam profile. This is especially true with GT's -- Cobras are much more forgiving of cam swaps. But the Cobra calibration is also quite a bit weaker than the GT one. The best solution is to get a chip or tuner (like the aforementioned PMS). If you can't make it run properly with that, it's not the computer's fault . If you waste money on getting an A9L from a 93 or earlier, it'll end up costing you about the same as a chip, maybe more, and all you'll end up with is another stock Ford calibration. Wouldn't you rather have something optimized for your setup?
