ive got a roller 5.0 in my car and i put 10w30 synthetic in it, and after 300 miles the lifters started ticking! so i finally got tired of the ticking and decided to put good oil in it, so i went with castrol gtx 10w40 and the ticking is gone.......main point though, when i was pouring the oil outta the oil filter IT WAS AS THIN AS WATER! so i suggest against using that stuff ever

Sorry, I've been using it for 10 years now and swear by it. Some new engines come with synthetic in them.

yes its good for some engines, i use it in our other cars, but for the 5.0 it just doesnt stay thick enough to keep the lifters properly pumped up, and this is why my oil pressure guage reading 65.

You should be safe with a blend if you still want to use it. The only problems I ever had with it is it getting by gaskets that didn't seal perfectly...regular oil was fine with the same gasket!

Maniac!

Ahh, so your entire knowledge base on synthetic oils comes from internet bulletin boards.

Got it...

internet, not just bulletin boards thank you, which happens to be the same place you most likely get your info. and still, i was letting everyone know that my car didnt like the stuff at all, whats the harm in that?

yeah i've heard alot about using synthetic oil in older engines. mostly about it leaking past the seals. i figure if your engine came with synthetic, then use it. if it didnt, then dont.

Not sure if it's true or not but I've heard that Synthetics are really thin when cold but thicken up when they reach operating temp.
I've never heard about leaking past gaskets but I could imagine that would happen.
I'd go with what was said above, if it came that way from the factory keep it that way, if not then don't start using it.

Uh, 10w30 will be thinner than 10w40 no matter what brand, chemistry, or what ever. My S10 has 200k on M1 oil w/o a tick. Sounds to me like you lifters are at about the end of there life cycle. I hardly know anyone that does not use synthetic, and none of them have plans to go back to the dinosaur ages.

I've been using Amsoil synthetic for years and am a true believer. I even put it to the test -- I went 21,000 miles between oil changes, and sent a sample of the oil to an independent lab for analysis. It came back totally nominal. The one I was using had a recommended change interval of 1 year or 25,000 miles (I put 30k on the car that year). On top of that I got 1-2 mpg more than with conventional oil.

Your lifters made noise because the synthetic oil cleaned them out and the rest of your engine too. do a lifter adjustment, Synthetic oil is rated the same as reg. oil, like 10w30 but also 5 times as slick. and thats good for performance. The slick part is what made your lifters tap, do a adjustment.
If you rebuild your early stang motor dont use synthetic oil till the motor gets broke in, about 400 to 800 miles. or your bearings will not "break in" and the moly or chrome rings might not "seat" and will smoke. Dont change over to a synthetic if your engine has high mileage. synthetics act like a cleaning agent as well as super slick and can but not always spell disaster. If you want a better oil for your high miler then change to a blend.
New engine that have synthetic from new are broke in with special oil from the factory then changed to synthetic.

i have used synthetic oil in a variety of engines over the years, including a 3.8 V6, 5.0 V8, two inline sixes (a 170 and a 200), and even a 6.9 diesel engine with no trouble except for a few leaks from old gaskets and worn seals. if any engine was going to have a problem with synthetic oil, it would have been my diesel.
