My engine builder says Im suppose to have an oil deflector. i cant find one in my "pile o' parts" from my old motor. But, when I was dissassembling the old motor, I busted the timing cover and scrapped it. Dont think there was one attached to it and one other thing, my engine builder is a GM mechanic by trade, but has built some SB fords. So is he wrong? Help me out here. Thanks!!

The best thing I can figure what your talking about is a baffle for the lower intake or valve covers.

The lower intake baffle is attached to the underside of the lower intake to keep oil out of the pcv valve.

I think he means a windage tray.

No the Mustang 5.0 does not have one. Might be a decent idea to install one though

no, not what Im talking about. Its suppose to be something that goes behind the timing chain cover to keep the front seal from blowing out. This sound familiar? oh yeh, I did get a windage tray!

Not that i'm aware of. The harmonic balancer bolts to the crank and the seal rides against that. The timing cover may have a small deflector plate but that's it. I can't quite picture what else it could be.

Maybe he is talking about a oil slinger that bolts up on the cam.... No you don't have to have it.

He is not referring to any of those things.

You are referring to what is often called an "oil slinger". It goes on the end of the crankshaft, in front of the crank gear and behind the timing chain cover.

It looks like this:

It's purpose was to keep oil from splashing directly on the timing chain cover seal, and also to "sling" oil back on to the timing chain/gears and/or fuel pump eccentric (if equipped with a mechanical fuel pump).

Above poster has it right, thats the oil slinger, and no you don't need it. The timing chain sees alll the oil it needs without it,I might run one if I had a mechanical fuel pump though.

yeh Im sure thats what were talking about. So as long as Im runnin a Electric fuel pump I dont have to have it right? My timing cover is from an 83 model but I have a block off plate there where the mech fuel pump went. That shouldnt matter right? Thanks guys!

Might have to get a Dart block but don't want to and if I do, then 363 instead of 331. Thoughts on what I've already bought so far.......
