Don't sell your Fox

I love the fact that i feel every bump in the road in my coupe. I can't wait until i do the carpet so i can rip all the sound deadening out of it so it gives an even better connection to the road. If i wanted plush and comfy i sure as hell wouldn't own anything from the mid '80s.

When i drive a performance car, i want to feel it, hear it, smell it and if possible taste it. I don't wanna be cruising down the road at 100mph and feel like i'm sitting on the couch at home.

Ill keep my simple easy to work on cheap to buy parts, and 20 years old still kicking 99% of all the cars asses out there with low tech light weight and a small v8 that,ll run over 200,000 miles with no heavy maintenece.

I agree with all of the above except the fox being an ENTHUSIAST'S car. Mustangs in general are ENTHUSIAST'S cars. The Fox seemed like the logical choice when your only other alternatives to a fast, cool looking ride wore either a bow tie, or were Japanese based and stickered for thousands more.

Such is not the case now a day’s. Hell, everything from the boy wonder imports to your mom’s grocery getter SUV seems to have over 200hp today. You need more than just decent strait line acceleration to keep up with the Jones’s. Don’t be hatin’ just because your beloved Fox’s weren’t able to cut the Mustard any longer and were replaced. Things just have to evolve to keep up with the time, that’s just the way it is. Some of you guys talk as though the Fox Mustang could even hold a candle to the newer S197 in any head to head comparison. If that’s the case, aside from looks (since they’re subjective to personal taste anyways).....name one! Don’t confuse refining the package with going soft. I find it funny that people have complained about the Fox Mustangs rough edges and unrefined persona since it rolled off the assembly line in the early 80’s. Now that all of those complaints and concerns have been address with the new model, they want to complain some more because it’s no longer the same car. Well, what’s that tell ya? The reason you see “soccer moms” running around in them now, is not because they’re a lesser car, it’s because they’re a better car. That now appeals to everyone who can afford one, just as the original did. Lets face it, you had to be a certain kind of person to enjoy driving the fox. A little ego, mixed in with some blind faith along with a touch of ignorance and a hint of personal bias along with a heaping spoon full of pride was what was needed to enjoy her on a daily basis.

If you look past that salt shaker of ingredients noted above, even personal short sightedness has to tell you than evolution was enevidable and everything about the old horse had to be changed in order to keep up with today’s standards? I mean, if it was such a superior car in every way, why aren’t they still being made today? Of course Fox lovers are going to disagree and stick up for their ride. Not doing so would be blasphemous and basically admitting that their old tried and true pony of yesteryear is a lesser car today. But the sooner that these guys are able to come to terms with that, the sooner they’ll be able to appreciate the past Mustangs for what they were and the new cars for what they are!

Heck, I did, I was right there along with you guys years ago and loved my old Fox while I had it. But the sad truth was that age, practicality and lack of technological advancement and refinement caught up with the old girl. Sure, I could have bolted on a slew of aftermarket parts to breath some new life into her, but the end result was still the same. And I was only prolonging the inevitable. I was sad to see her go and she’ll always have a special place in my heart, but I’m in no way going to attempt to fool myself into thinking this was and will ever be the best Mustang ever made. Having test drove a new S197 I can absolutely say without a doubt that “THIS IS THE BEST MUSTANG EVER MADE!!!” Some may not like the styling, some may not like the added weight, but to ignore the rest of its accomplishments because of personal bias is foolish. I immediately sat behind the wheel of the new car with my own personal reservations thinking to myself. “Ya know, not matter what, this thing still isn’t my old Fox.”, but after driving it around a little and putting it through it’s paces and letting the car grown on me, I look back now and say “yep….this thing certainly isn’t my old fox!”

Keep telling yourself that. This statement only holds true in the eyes of Fox owners that love their car and refuse to recognize its short comings. The only people who seem to pay the outrageous prices some of these fox owners are asking for their 15 and 20-year-old, high mileage, beat to rat **** cars (that usually consist of nothing more than a shiny new paint job, an aftermarket CAI a set of under drive pulleys and some low profile wheels and tires) are other fox lovers. Don't fool yourself into thinking that this car is going to be held to some higher standard just because there are a few die hards out there who can't see past the glory days of the RWD V8 Muscle of 80's and 90's. This was after all the highest produced model ever made and them becoming a rarity or some sort of coveted collectors model is slim to none. To the rest of the world, it’s just another used car worth marginally over black book at best. I also own both, and the newer Mustangs are def. Mustangs thru and thru. I LOVE my 07 GT cause the a/c blows you out of the car, the ride is so much better, and it's quicker then my Fox. Now, it doesn't have the character my Fox has, and I would throw my 07 in the dumpster before I would let someone scratch my Fox, but for an every day car... The S197 is 1000000000 times better then the Fox.

I'm not sure where you were going with this one? I stated, that for its time, there weren't many other choices for a high performance vehicle other than one of the Generals crew or a more expensive Import. But now a days, I can think of half a dozen cars right off the top of my head that'll walk on, or give a Fox Mustang a run for it's money.....and all of them are 4-door sedans.

For starters, pretty much any car built by Nissan with a V6 under the hood will run nearly door to door with a stock Fox body....and a couple of them will leave it in the dust. Not to mention any of the Hemi powered Mopar cars will put a stock Fox to shame. You'll also notice that all of the above mentioned cars are also considerably heavier and most of them considered "family vehicles" by comparison. But it's pretty hard to evaluate them price wise since the Fox hasn't been made in 15-years, but it just goes to show you how far we've come when moms grocery getter is able to keep pace with what was once considered one of the hottest cars of the 80's.

As for maintenance and hard to work on, I guess since all of these cars are still blessed with the factory warranty, many of us won't have to worry about that for a while. Sure parts are a little more expensive, but the engines are lasting every bit as long as the old 302 did and with less maintenance in most cases. And unless you're doing a complete over haul, the maintanence isn't any more difficult (and in some cases easier) with the majority of the newer engines. For instance changing spark plugs in a 4.6L vs a 5.0L instantly comes to mind.

You guys make is sound as though I’m anti-Fox or something? I’ve said it several times now, I loved my little Fox! It was a great car for it’s time and if going fast in a strait line is what you’re after, there’s probably little else out there that would satisfy you. But for those who want to step into the new millennium with the added ability to stop, turn, handle and ride in comfort and also like the idea of having a warranty, the S197 is certainly a worthy replacement. I’d personally rather own a car for the first half of its life, instead of the last half. And I would certainly have no trouble choosing a monthly car payment, over monthly maintenance.

If you feel happy with nissans and car payment no one cares, most of owners of foxes work on them and like simplicity and dont tell me your front drive nissans are simply built with cvc joints terminal understeer torque ect.
Obviously there was a big following of these foxes judged by amount sold generaly cars good sol popular will be popular used also.
I never rageed the new stangs others did.
Bang for the buck still can hold true nearly 20 years later ,most owners apreciate and relish it also.
depreciation, will make any new car drop its value like a rock if new cars are your thing youre talking generally to the wrong crowd
if you dont think its something that a 20 year old stock 5.0 can still beat up most vehicle today new or not then youve missed the whole point why fox owners like then great value also

I'd much rather put $600 a month into mods than car payments, but if you can afford both - more power to ya.

Also , Gearbanger - S197's don't have 5.0s so why are you still browsing the 5.0 forums? You just can't stay away from foxes, can you?

This is a no contest that i've preached about sooo many times....if you go dollar for dollar and give 2 guys each 27k to spend, and one guy spends it all on a new '05 GT and the other spends 3k on a used Fox and then spends the other $24 on mods....you'd have to be crazy to think the Fox wouldn't run circles around the '05, and contrary to popular belief you can build it well enough to not lose out on the creature comforts too. But then again as i said earlier, a cushy quiet ride in a sports car is contradictory IMO.

A new Mazda 6, couldn't pass me on the highway once when I had my 5.0L Cougar (4000lb car LOL)... I don't think I have much to worry about the V6 imports too much lol Everything can look nice on a car brochure but out in the real world with on-hand experience, things come to life... Like how my ex-notch took about the same amount of fuel (maybe a little less) than a Civic Si for a 6 hour trip to its new home (and run low 13's high 12's). Or how that Mazda 6 (with V6) couldn't get passed my old Cougar on the highway, not that I race often but I didn't feel like letting the kid (with sideways cap) pass me with his mom's car.

The argument about the "27K" is dumb. With an S197 you get a NEW car with way more creature comforts then any Fox has, and a warranty to boot! I love both cars, and I love my Fox more (the reason i don't drive it much.. to preserve it), but I would never want to drive it every day every again.

The daily driven aspect i will agree with, simply because i wouldn't put that kind of money into a car and risk getting it wrecked. You have to look at my statement simply from a performance aspect. Once you bring in the warranty and creature comfort aspects, you may as well be talking about a Benz because it's apples to oranges and a brand new car vs. a 20ish year old car. My comment was strictly based on performance.

Yes, but you're taking a 15+ year old car and adding $27,000 worth of modifications to it. How can you possibly consider this an even match up? The cost of the car alone is going to leave you 20-25K to play with. You then compare it to buying a new GT, which requires you to spend the entire budget on the car alone. So great, you've now build a fast Fox....that's still saddled with 25-year-old technology, carries the resale of an old car and is still a crap shoot for general reliability.

You can't compare the cost of new, to the cost of old, because in the end you're still left with just an old car wearing a new dress. I think it's a given that for what you gain in money saved on the initial payment, you loose in general wear and tear through 15-25 years of daily rot. In my opinion, if you want to make any sort of legitimate (and I use that term loosely) "non stock" comparison between the two, just look to the cost of the modifications alone!

As far as bolt-ons go...It's a pretty even match up as far as I’m concerned. Without even touching on the more advance chassis and capable braking….from a power perspective, the S197 already has a 75hp jump on the Fox while also being able to maintain decent fuel economy and emissions levels. So whatever might be gained with the cost of a H/C/I swap on the fox is also going to add to the performance of the S197 as well. Just how much is really impossible to say, since different people are going to build their cars to do different things, but the general consensus of the S197 having a “head start” still applies. If you want to talk blown or any sort of power adder. You guys are in for a rude awakening if you think the Fox is going to win this one. Regardless of their smaller displacement, the new 3V's are seeing over 400rwhp with as little as 6psi. These babies move some air and are even proving to be more potent in most cases than the 4V. Now before someone pipes in with the "stroker" option, let me address it right now. I often find it funny how a lot of Fox owners complain about the 4.6L's limited displacement capabilities, yet in order to keep pace with it's performance abilities, it requires a complete alteration of their engine configuration to do so. Whether it be in the form of a stroker, or an all out engine swap it still defeats the purpose when comparing a 5.0L to a 4.6L.

Then of course if you want to get beyond the general modifications and what your average owner will spend on their ride....well, I'll say all bets are off. Throw enough money at anything and it can be made scary fast. But in the end, you're still stuck with whatever you started with. Whether it be a new car with a payment gnawing at you for the next 5-years, or an old car with one foot in the grave that'll nickel and dime you to death.

Love the Fox for its nostalgic value and if you must, fall in love with it’s rough and tough attitude. But if you honestly think it’s a “better” car of the two, then the only person you’re fooling is yourself!

These fox guys like me have limited funds dont think any one meant the fox is better they like it, and main reason is money.

For the blue collared owners of foxes like most of us we buy what we can afford!!!!

Again....excellent rebuttal! I especially like when you've got nothing constructive to say on the subject, you choose to insult and attempt to demean my opinion as an alternative. My comments were based on points that OTHER Fox owners have made during the course of this thread. So obviously, they seem to care about the points I’ve brought up. And for someone who chooses not to “articulate and give tons of input”, you certainly don’t seem to have a problem throwing in you .02 with this little jabs in attempts to belittle my points. Who cares if I currently own a Fox or what I choose to own in the future. I've been there in the trenches with everyone else here, having owned 3-of them in the past, while experiencing both their high and low points and that certainly qualifies me to speak on the subject.

If you don't care for or agree with my opinion, feel free to post an alternate one of your own. If you don't care what I have to say, then feel free to add me to your ignore list or skim right on past my posts. If that doesn’t do it for you, the feel free to unsubscribe to this thread altogether and leave those of us who choose to discuss the topic civilly alone.

Ya know i just had a huge paragraph typed....but i deleted it. I don't think people even read these things...lol

Basically, is it unfair that one guy spends 27k on a new 'stang and another guy spends 3k on a Fox and then dumps 24k into mods and blows the new stang off the charts in every single performance category known to man? Well, money gets spent in different ways...that's everyone's choice. Some people want a warranty while others are content to fix their car themselves. Everyone has the option to spend money however they want, so if the owner of a new 'stang is upset that he gets blown away by the modded 20yr old car, maybe he should've thought about his goals better.

I know that in 20 years my car will still be on the road unless it gets totaled or stolen or something stupid like that. It's been going strong now for 22 years, which is longer than a lot of members on this site have even been alive. That to me is a better guarantee than any warranty you can give me.

How many guys out there have the resources to truely fix anything that goes wrong with their new Mustang? I can have mine torn down to the bare shell with hand tools...and i don't have to pay labor to get it fixed.

I just don't think there's any argument to be made if 2 guys are under a strict budget and one chooses to spend all his money in one place while the other spends it on a restoration car and tons of mods. Dollar for dollar in THIS aspect alone, the Fox is going to win hands down.

If A/C and a quiet ride and a warranty are all you want, then hell no, the Fox is not for you. If you wanna spend what the other guy is spending on just purchasing his car to build your own car that will out perform the newer Mustang in every aspect of performance, then go the restoration route.

I work in an office and never tasted great-poop-on? I also owned 3 fox bodies, can afford a newer one such as 2003 (not a 2007 yet)... What does this have to do with "don't sell your fox" thread?

Some of us choose problems such as owning a fox for a reason Like running pretty much 14 flat with MPH to run in the mid/high 13's with the type of bolt-on a 2 year old can do (CAI, pulleys, headers) Piss off people with the new "all-mighty" car with a ratty old clunking fox body 5.oh yeah baby
