Door Ident Plate Clean Up

The ident plate on the drivers door of my 65 coupe has been painted over by the PO, body color. As part of the vehicle disassembly for repaint I was going to drill out the rivets, remove the ident plate and remove the existing paint with brake fluid or similar.
I imagine that this will remove the original black paint from the ident plate as well and leave me with a blank plate with some stamped numbers. Is this right? If so, does anyone produce a decal or similar that could be applied over the cleaned plate to return it to a factory look.

I have a similar, but not as severe situation with my car. Mine has some primer on it--I plan to try to clean it with a q-tip and some lacquer thinner as the primer is lacquer based. I don't have a great solution for your paint removal, but one piece of advice I do have is not to drill out the rivets. Just take a small punch and press the rivets through the centers to stretch them--they are real soft and will stretch out easily. Once you have done that you can gently pry the plate off. This will prevent any further damage to the plate from the drill bits.

I don’t think Marti makes the plates anymore for legal reasons.

Thanks 69 Rustang, I got the plate off real easy on Saturday by stretching the rivets per your suggestion.

I just got a new dataplate from Marti three weeks ago, so you may want to check your info.

All of the Mustang-vendors (hey Ford, can I still call them that?) used to sell blank plates that could could have stamped any way you want. I guess I can see why they'd feel pressure to stop due to our litigous society, but the door plate is not the one used to identify the true VIN, only some of the options like trim/tans/axle ect.

Keep the original - do NOT get a new one made. So many people are getting new plates made with more desirable exterior colors and interior options that it makes me skeptical when I see a new plate. Really a big problem with the 65-66 because there is no Marti report to confirm.

I'll strip the old paint off mine, clean it up and see what it looks like. My decision whether to buy a new plate will be based on what the old plate looks like when its cleaned up. I certainly have no intention of replacing the existing plate with a new one with different codes.
