Drag racing question..*

Hey ya'll.
Alrite, here's the deal:
I am a 16 year-old female who absolutely loves old mustangs. I have a 1970 Mach 1 & I love it. :D

My boyfriend is having an annual get together and everyone's taking their cars to the local Test-n-Tune here sometime in the near future.

I hopefully plan to take my car up there because there is a jerk who thinks he can beat me. :chair:
I'm not so positive I can win, but I think I have a good chance.

Do ya'll think that a 1976 Camaro with a 305 will beat my Mach 1 with a 351C?
I have a 3 and a quarter rear.
I'm not sure whats in his, but I'm pretty sure it's stock.

I need some encouragement here, so all help would be greatly appreciated.
Also if you have any advice about first-time drag racing, please reply.

Thanks in advance.

leave on the last yellow and pull a holeshot on him. however dont have the engine revs about 2000 rpm when you do otherwise you will spin the tires too much and he may walk past you. if your 351c is in proper tune, you should be able to lay a solid whipping on him, assuming you drive the car right also. if you have an automatic, hold first gear untill you feel the engine start to nose over(lose power), this will be around 5500 rpm. then shift to second, and do the same thing. same if you have a 4spd, but dont be gentle with the shift with the 4spd, you want to grab the next gear as fast as possible.

Now that's refreshing! A 16 year old girl who loves classic Mustangs. THat's great!
The others are right that a 351C in good tune should beat a stock 305 Chevy. If you are lining up against him, then definitely leave on the last yellow light. If you wait till you see green, you lose.
When you stage: after the pre-stage lights are on then "inch" into the staging lights and stop immediately when the light comes on. Now, left foot on the brake and right on the gas. (for an automatic) Get rpm's at around 1000 and give it as much gas off the line to spin the tires just a little. Racing with street tires you will know you are at the edge of traction if you spin just a little.
If automatic then shift it yourself. I think 5500 sounds about right to shift at as well. You will have to experiment to see where the car likes to be shifted though. Shift "just" as you feel the car stop pulling hard.
Good luck!

Its great to here of fellow young classic stangers. Especiallly when they are girls. If its any help, a friend of mine had a '77 Camaro. I killed him in my '73, 302 with a mild street cam.

Those 351 clevelands are capable of putting down some serious power.
BTW- got any pics?

Tiff,

When I ran the second Shoot-out for Mustang Illustrated a ways back, we had a 72 351 Cleveland 4-speed Mach run, and it finally got into the high 14's. Very much a street car, but in good tune. The trick is to get it off the line quick & clean, and let the motor wind up. Those Clevelands love higher revs.

If you want, I should be able to find a pic of the car at that event.

Thanks for all the advice ya'll. :)
I really appreciate it. It will be put to good use.
At the moment I only have one picture of the car on this computer, but I'll get more later.

I really hope I kick his butt, because he's a real jerk.

Btw: candyapple - It's gonna be at Farmington Dragway.
I don't know the exact date yet though.
We've all gotta get our cars in great condition and get in some practice.

But thanks 2 everyone & if me and the boyfriend don't work out I know where to find guys into the same thing as me, lol! ;)

Here's the 70 Mach 1 I used in both Shoot-Outs, 351C 4-speed, 3.50 gears, and on the cover of Mustang Illustrated in 2000. Neat car, ran easy 14.5's, mostly stock.

Get some sticky rubber, practice launching, you'll embarass the Camaro!

I used to have this 69 SCJ, easy 13.8's in full street dress! Launching was very hard, as I had to "Granny" it off the line to avoid wheelspin. Once it was hooked up, it just ran like a freight train!
