Drove an 03 mach 1

4.30s and tire will put a mach in the mid 12s until you snap a weak stock axle and run no where
Just to prove how bad of a track (apparently) I go to for drag racing....

There's a local kid with a Mach 1, with two mods that I know of -- 4.10's (now with new axles :D), and great big ol' slicks (so big they stick out from the car a bit...). And when he launches his Mach 1, the sound from those tires is absolutely unholy (makes you hurt inside just to think about the force involved when he drops that clutch). And he has of course broken it already, so now it has an upgraded differential and new axles. He runs 13.1's all day long.

So to all the people who wonder why my 95 GT can only turn a 13.3 on street tires, it's not just me... :)

Damn those cars are sick!! My brother picked one up saturday and I had to drive it home. Boy oh boy is that thing bad. Anyone else drove one? I was really impressed with the low end grunt and the thing absolutley screams at the top of the tach. 6800rpm redline and it pulls ALL the way up. My car is slow so it felt like a rocket to me. The seats are so nice and overall it is very good condition. Ok no real point to the thread just thought I'd share.

Comments, questions...... :spot:

Wait till u take a slightly modded cobra for a whip :D

I like the machs alot, and you can get them new fairly cheap around here, 21-22k out the door it seems, which isnt to bad.

Theres a azure blue mach 1 at my track who is in the 11's, i raced him once, he went 11.7. Not to sure on the MPH, it was fairly low, 112 range maybe. His mach is just bolt ons, but EVERYTHING tubular, no seats, bogarts, so its very very light. But man that thing launchs hard!

My two favorite street cars run at Cecil County (my local strip) almost every weekend. One is a cammed LS1 Firebird. This car is flat-out ignorant. He's got some kind of ladder bar-style rear suspension and a set of 26" slicks. His license plate says "NUTCASE". The other guy has a 03 Mach 1 with a 4.56, Slicks, X-pipe, and catback.

Both of them are older fellas and can drive a stick car with the best of them. The sound of them bringing the cars through the beams at ~6500 RPM is enough to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. When they side step the clutches you can hear the slicks slam the ground and they take off like a bat out of hell (1.50 60's). It sounds like someone just hit their car's with sledge hammers. The Firebird runs high 10's and the Mach runs low 11's. It's really some incredible stuff...

what is his trap though? elevation plays a role.

a local girl did upper and lowers 4.30s and et streets and was running mid 12s at 105
:nice:

everything else stock and quiet

I wouldn't go less than 4.30's for a mod motor. 3.73's aren't enough for this torquey pushrod motor....

Jake

Well having owned a mod motor (SOHC)...there is no need for anything more than 410's...The Mach 1 has 355's stock...nice car and picks up nicely...but there is no need to sit at 3k rpm at 80mph on the interstate...mileage/engine wear suffer...

With just 373's in my 5.0L "we" sit at 2k rpm at 60mph and that is taking up 1/3 of the power potential in the rpm and that is at cruise...no need for that IMO...

If you were going to make the DOHC a strip/street car the 430's would be nice...but many people aren't buying the Mach's (Cobras) to use as a strip car but drive everyday...

Your forgetting the "daily driver" factor...your one of those "bigger/more is better" guys...that is fine and all but you have to think of the other side...

2 timid?...lol

actually i am one of those " i want to be the fastest i can" guys

and i daily drive my car over 20K a year. 13k just this summer commuting to work. and i am on skinnies.

people are just too frightened to try things and are stuck in the paradime that there is no driveability.

4.30s in a mach 1 is better than 4.10s in a 5.0 for daily driving

4.10s on my tires is 2550 rpm at 70 while 4.30s in a mach is 2440

Now if your a 3.73 man, 3.73s in our car is 2320...... so you are going to sit here and tell me 120 more rpm is too much and undriveable? OK

sorry i am not bashing you i just might come off that way. I just want to go outside the box of the typical internet response and give them the educated racer's respose so some kid doesnt read this thread and make the wrong decision.

Quit using those calculators...you haven't even drove the car...

Actually the typical "internet" response is "don't fear the gear"...so your being typical...

I'm not afraid to try new things...I've drove in cars with 410's and that is all that needs to go if your going to drive it everyday (highway included)...

The comparison between 410's (5.0) and 4:30's (DOHC) is actually pretty close...not sure where you got the "better" clause...

How is their no "driveability" with gears...no it just shortens engine life (higher rpms), gas mileage, more of a strain with traction on other components, and in town driving becomes a pain shifting all the time...

I believe it is better to steer someone in a "safer" direction than leading them straight to your gold mine of "don't fear the gear"...if the driver feels he wants more...then he'll get more...

Instead of explaining just the "positives" on a mod...explain the side effects as a result to help that "kid" make up his mind...

A 4.30 is good in a DOHC car, even for a daily driver. We have to remember also that a 4V can rev clean to 6800 and not miss a beat. They have a much more RPM to work with. Not to sound like a jackass, but revving a 4V at 2800 is about as efficient as revving a pushrod car at 2500. They can tolerate higher RPM on the freeway.

do you like shifting to 5th or do you wnat to run 12.0 at 102?
Yep. And I like driving around town turning 2000 RPM in 5th gear going about 40 MPH. :D

Just kidding. I really didn't and wouldn't gear my car that high. I was just being an ass....

this makes 4.56 gears killer

about every week i toss around the idea of a Heads cammed 4valve in my car.... but when i start going over prices, its just retarded for what i can do to mine.

i can just slap an s trim on there and trap 120s and run less gear.

now maybe that setup in a lighter car ..... but if i do any hybrid cars in the future they will probably have an ls1 residing under the hood..... perhaps a z3 or an FD rx7
