drum brakes

ok long story short got another stang guy who owned it put brakes on front n rear everything new.i started hearing a noise like metal on metal on right rear so i pulled the wheel and drum off and the bottom bracket that locks the adjuster was floating around in there ok no biggie get it all straightened out and put back together and the drum wont go back on so i back the adjuster all the way down and it still wont go back on?wtf!the shoes cant posibly close any more then what i got them without removing the adjuster.what can be the problem?

Sure you didn't adjust it backwards? I think one side is reverse threaded.

lol yeah im sure the adjustment is all the way closed and its still not happening.

Is there a ridge on the drum thats preventing it from going back on? If not, all I can say is double check everything and make sure its in the proper place. Sometimes itll be a little out of alignment. Hit the shoes from each side and try to get them in a uniform circle in relation to the backing plate. If ones too high up and ones to down low itll be an oval and we all know the only way an oval fits in a circle is with a hammer

yeah my hammer was calling my name so i went inside,i did however try what you said and still no go.ive never seen anything happen like this before.im a mechanic by trade but for polaris atvs jetskis and snowmobiles so its not like im a noob doing my first brake job.what i dont understand is the drum came off easy and the adjuster was attached just the lock plate and the cable werent attached.as of now i took the adjuster and all the bottom pieces out left the shoes on and im driving it like that,i know bad idea but untill i figure it out its gonna be like this.

if all else fails take it to a brake shop and have them figure out what's goin on in there

I would look at the otherside and compare the two to see if there are any differences. Make sure it has the right shoes in there as well as the right adjuster and other equipment.

God I ****ing hate drum brakes and i curse the fool who decided it was a good idea to put them on a v8 car

yeah i did take the other side off and everything is exactly the same just reversed doesnt make any damn sense to me and everything is brand new i mean everything drums shoes all hardware everything

that i might have to check in the morning,i just recently put on the e brake equalizer it wasnt hooked up when i got the car.......... good call maybe i got the ebrake too tight and its putting a drag on it

Dammit, I got beat to it!The last job of the day before I left work yesterday was a Ranger with rear drums that kept locking up and it turns out his E-brake cables were seized making the brakes stay on and dragging. I was halfway home and I kept wondering to myself if that might be the problem in your car. Check the cable routing and if you pull the bad side apart again, grab on the ebrake mechanism and pull it toward you to release the tension and then make sure to put some caliper/dielectric grease where everything rides.

Did you try to push them back in with the bleeder screw open? Yes, I know it seems obvious, but I've done worse. Actually I did the same thing before. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Make sure the shoes are on the right orientation, primary and secondary.

Make sure the pistons are seated in the wheel cylinder, and not cocked at the end of the bores. Then make sure the shoes are seated on the pin at the top.

As noted, make sure the ebrake cable, and actuator rod are in the proper position and seated.

Then you should be able to bring them close enough together with the adjuster at the bottom so that the drum just slips on.

Drums can be painful due to the springs. I use a piece of #10 wire bent to a hook and handle to install the e brake spring.

thanks for all the good replys fellas its raining here today and my garage is packed with another project car and a crapload of stang parts so i cant pull it in ,hopefully itll let up before dark so i can try again.again thanks for your help im almost positive it has something to do with the e brake becouse everything was fine till about a week after i hooked the e brake up.its so easy for me when i get pissed to overlook the obvious thats why i love this forum.you folks arent pissed at my car so you can think rationally!!!!!:SNSign:

if all else fails get a huge screw driver and put it between the center of the axle hole and pry out against the brake drum......keep doing this evenly all the way around the drum. As you get a little daylight anywhere spray the hell out of it with WD-40!!! then if you get to a point that it sticks again, actually push it back on some and spray the hell out of it again until it frees up with the screw driver motion!

well i said screw it im not made of sugar so i went out in the rain and tore it down again,sure enough the ebrake cable was sticking problem solved thanks again fellas i now have full braking power!!!!!!!!:SNSign:
