Dumb question but i need to identify a part in the engine bay.

It's a black box with hoses coming out though none of mine actually go anywhere it seems. There's a sensor connected and I think it's part of the smog system but all that is long gone in my car. It's located on the left side (pass) of the engine bay below the inner fender and in front to the left of the radiator. I have a haynes manual but couldn't find out any info. I'll take a pic tomorrow of it.

Sounds like the vapor canister. It basically sucks excess gasoline vapor from the gas tank, I think.

Well no mention of the vapor canister in haynes. I do smell gas sometimes but the car does have off road pipes hooked up. Any resources that show how the canister is hooked up?

it's sometimes called a Charcoal canister, and yeah it cleans up the fuel vapors. There's a plastic line coming from the tank that goes through the fender by the strut tower I believe and to the charcoal canister, that is probably where the gas smell is coming from. I've heard you can snip the line inside the fender and point it down to get rid of a gaseous smell. The canister also had a line that ran to the upper intake...that should be capped off at the intake.

The "electrical sensor" you are reffering to is probably the purge soleniod. When the engine is at a certain RPM (stock is 1250RPM) it will activate, opening the line to the intake where the intake will suck in the vapors and burn them to reduce air emissions.

I unhooked mine and cut it at the back and routed it up into the gas tank spout. If you stick your nose up to the the gas tank filler neck you can smell gas lol but that is normal......i assume.
