Im a little confused, because Ive read a lot where guys are getting close to 400 at the wheels with the right 331 combo. I thought for sure you could get 400 easily with a 351

I think I probably could get pretty close to there if I would run a better flowing head like AFR 185 or 205's and some more cam.Trickflow cam is really pretty mild. If I just got rid of A/C and smog and a good tuned chip I guess I would be around 370 or so. I am happy though.Just wanted a car i could get in every day and could kick on the air and still run pretty good, with excellent drivability. There was a guy who had his 347 dynoed when i was up there and he put 400 to the wheels. He did not have any air ,smog, or powersteering hooked up and was also running a more aggressive cam and AFR 185's.

Most guy guys I see with 331s that are daily drivers are making anywhere from 350-390rwhp... the ones usually making more hp are running higher rpm setups with high rpm intakes.. those kind of setups require a light car or a lot of gear to get them to work in your favor as they usually dont make a lot of low end tq to move these heavy SN95s.. the 378tq he got is awesome and will surely work in his favor.

Ya, its all about the h/c/i package hes got. If he had 205cc's and at least the stage 2 cam he would be making 400 probably

Agreed.... the main thing is getting the H/C/I to fit your setup so that it benefits the rest of your car and what your gonna use it for. You can stick a huge cam in a motor and give it killer flow numbers but if its a 3,800lb car with 3.73 gears and the power band of the motor doesnt start till around 4-4,500 rpm its not gonna turn as impressive of a time as a motor thats making less power yet having more power down low. I talked with Ed Curtis for a while on the phone when I told him about my combo and he said he doesnt play the dyno game.. told me he has cars making low power on a dyno yet turing the times of those cars making much more. He built me a cam that made the same upper end power as my big cam yet he gave me a ton more low end power to go with it. Those numbers Cobra351 is making should be enough to put him low low 12s if not high 11s.

Thanks guys...in MY case, I would take a 350 rwhp car that is EXTREMELY realiable with everything working in it than a 400HP car with problems. You could still kick A$$ on 99% of the cars out there and almost all the ricers.

My goal is to ditch the Vortech and put in a 331 long block with AFR's and mild to moderate cam that can run close to a 12.0.

Thanks

When you say you're getting tip-in detonation, I'm assuming you're saying it's detonating when you shift. Is that right? I'm not sure how you can fix that without a tuner.
Well actually I get detonation under light load say up a hill around 1800 to 2200 rpm. Or just cruzing at 1800 and just giving it a little gas i will get some pinging. But if i open the throttle more and it gains rpm it will immediatly go away. Now if i dont run the diablo chip, I can run 12 to 14* of timing without this pinging, but lose 6 hp and 18 ft/lb of torque. If you look at my dyno sheet with the a/f you can see that i run extremely lean till about 2400 rpm.But without the chip I am only lean till 1700 rpm. Think I can get Diablo to fix this? Maybe pull a little timing initally and fatten it up at idle.

Under light load conditions like cruise and such the pcm commands somewhat high values of spark. The af ratio under those conditions is kinda lean also. Put the two together and you can see how you arrive at ping city.

try some edelbrock victor jr heads and some 30lb injectors with a adjustable fuel pressure gauge. you'll have to recal your MAS. Put your fuel pressure at about 39 to 40 lbs.you'll pick up some decent power. Also, you might consider going with a cam. go with a custom comp cam cause a 94-95 Gt is hard to find a cam that the car will like. Good luck....
