Well, took a trip to Denver today, gave the guy $600, and these are the results:

View attachment 427190

320 RWHP
390 ft.lbs torque

I'm not sure how I should feel about this....is this what you guys would expect from my combo? If it helps, my cam specs are as follows:

In. .510
Ex. .515
Duration @ .050: In. 230 Ex 235

This was after fine tuning, and he was going to test the mail order tune I had, but the A/F ratio quickly reached 16:1 and they quit. Makes me wonder what my pistons look like if its been running at 16:1?

I would think you would get more than that. Alot of people get around 300 with an H/C/I.

But the tourqe is good.

320HP with a 408? My stock block made only 28HP less with mild bolt on's. Not what you wanted to hear but just about all 408 guys on here clear 400HP. The Cam has to be the problem. Its way to mild for a 408. My mild 347 cam has a more aggressive lift at .533/.544.

If your getting lower than 1HP per cubic inch then there is a problem. Its easily attainable on a 408. You do have a mild combo but I would think there is more.

Gotta be the cam. Mine is at .600" lift, 240+ duration.

Yuck. Something is wrong. Without cats I am within 20HP of that with a 306. Mind you you ARE at 5300+ feet above sea level. Does it make that much a difference??

The infamous Grady once said you should be able to at least match your C.I. to your rwhp +. He's right. You should be at least 408rwhp but really more!

Ok, I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little depressed. I'm thinking two options. Get a meatier camshaft, new pushrods and lifters...but would a higher lift camshaft with more duration affect emissions?

Second option...since the cam is pretty mild, would that make it a good blower cam?

Edit: The results take into account the higher altitude.

i don't blame you, i would be to.

it will probably effect emissions. do you have to pass the sniffer? most OBD1 cars now only have a visual check. Then as long as you have cats your golden. i would at least step up to a cam that has over .600 lift.

as far as your blower cam, not a bad idea but then you'll have to buy a blower and try to mount it. depends on your plans but i would stick N/A, maybe a little nitrous shot for good measure

since you are running that lean, i would say you have a mechanical defect--ie a huge vacuum leak.

it is possible that the lower intake is not sealed right--god knows i have done it a few times.

if all that checks out, maybe look further into your fuel system.

i see you are not running a roller cam which can explain the lower lift/duration numbers, but i would still prolly go bigger.

I think a bigger cam would help. Don't worry too much about .600 lift.,.550 is o.k. It's the duration that is really going to help.
I would call a few cam companies and talk to them and see what they recommend. Comp and Crane have tech lines you can call. I know Comp has a toll free #. I had a Lunati cam in a non blown 408 and it made well over 400RWHP. It was a hyd roller nitrous cam and worked great N/A.

i would expect alot more, like 400+. i am expecting 450+ from my combo.

i don't really have much to add ... i also suspect the cam is too small. your fuel system should be able to handle that and more ... unless you are running out of injector or the maf is maxxed out ...

i wonder if the injectors are big enough to handle the amount air you are pushing. i also wonder if the 75mm maf and t/b are big enough. they are probably restricting air flow

I agree, I didn't read your injector size etc. 30lb injectors with a 85% duty cycle will support 370hp at the crank. You don't want to run them at 100% or they will burn up. So you do need bigger to support 400 rwhp which is really around 475hp at the crank.

Is there a 94-95 TB out there larger than 75? 75 was the largest I could find. Same goes for the MAF. If there are largers ones out there, anybody wanna give me some names?

Otherwise, it looks like I got larger injectors in my future. I have to pass emissions, so I don't know how friendly a larger cam is gonna be to the sniffer.

If I owned a 408 I would do.

AFR 225's
Custom Cam with around .600 lift
90MM Fox style Throttle Body
Pro-M 80MM MAF
AFM 4 inch Fox style cold air kit
42lb Injectors
1 7/8 Kooks Long Tube Headers
3 Inch Prochamber
3 Inch cat back

Look at post #5 (Low 5.0) and read his sig. You should have his parts and his dyno numbers.

That's a good combo, and I would do it like Low 5.0, but that's useless to me unless it can pass emissions. Can it?

Go with the Ford Lightening 90mm MAF from Jegs ($100)and the muscle motors adapter for the 94/95. I was told that any car with a good tune will pass emissions by my tuner.. Get 2 tunes, one with a lower timing and one with ta radical timing. The lower timing setting can be used for emissions only.

yeah 185s are the biggest afrs that are "emissions friendly", whatever that means. md has emissions laws too, but if i spend $450 trying to pass, then i am exempt for 2 more years.

you should easily be able to get an emissions legal cam though that is more agressive than the one you have now.

i am going with a 90mm lightning maf

i'm not sure if there are t/bs for the 94/95 that are larger than 75mm. if i can't find one, i'll go to a fox t/b setup.

sounds similar to my combo ...

408ci
AFR 205s
90mm LMAF
90mm throttle body
eddy performer rpm intake
42# injectors
Kooks 1 7/8" headers
custom exhaust with high flow cats and side exit
custom cam

i am going for a lower optimum rpm range for stoplight to stoplight performance
