Edelbrock carb challenge

My stock 289 stumbles/bogs coming out of hard turns in autocorss. I assume that the Edelbrock 500cfm (don't know model # but it is their most basic model) is not really a "race" carb and is not supplying fuel due to fuel slosh at the float/bowl. Any ideas to solve this without replacing the carb? TIA.

Off road needles and seats

Not sure, but in the hours of research I've had to do on edelbrock carbs I have come across 4wheelers mentioning problems with fuel slosh.

Off-Road Needles and Seats (pair) #1465
Includes a pair of spring loaded needles and .0935" seats.


Worth a shot.

Thanks for the idea. I don't know much about carbs. Is the needle attached to a float arm? And that would open and close the fuel flow?

buy a holley...

i tried for years to get my edelbrock to work well autocrossing and it never was right.

best to just jump ship now...

That's what the float does, whether it's a Holley, an Edelbrock AFB, or a Quadrajet. The float controls the needle, which sits in the seat. The needle and seat control the flow of fuel from the external fuel line. Take the lid off your toilet and flush it and you'll see the same thing in action.

That off road kit worked for me. It was a couple years ago that I had problems, I called Edlebrock and they sent me one N/C (carb was only a couple weeks old then) No problems since although I rarely drive it.

'02, do you autocross or road race it? If the kit solves the problem under high lateral g-force loads, I'll try it.

Bullitt, which Holley did you buy? Is it a very simple swap, and do you have to fool with jetting or does it come close for the needs of a stock 289 (I'm not experienced with carbs)?

Holley makes a 600cfm, vacuum secondary 4bbl Carburetor with an Electric Choke. It is part # 0-80457S, and comes out of the box very close to being dialed in for a 289, even a mostly stock 289. Besides setting the float level, idle mixture, and idle speed, you're good to go.

If you don't have a lot of experience/know how with carbs, you may want to think twice before switching to Holley. Both my Dad and brother in law had Holleys and were constantly rebuilding, retuning and trying to stop the leaks. They both switched to Edelbrock and are very very happy.

It's worth noting that my brother in law was "Airman of the Year" F-16 mechanic out at Luke AFB and is no stranger to Holley carbs. He did get his Holley running very well, but the amount of time spent on it was ridiculous.

I have had my Eddie for 3 years now and haven't touched it since its original tune and it still performs flawlessly - I don't even touch it to go through Arizona emissions and it sails through every time!

I'll probably get flamed from the Holley guys, so take it for what it's worth

No I dont race the Mach in fact last year I put about 100 miles on it and this year it hasn't been out yet. I know thats bad, but all my time is in my 02.

The car does has been lowered and has a stiff suspension. It would bog anytime you got it and Edlebrock suggested the kit, since they sent it to me I figured I give it a try. I like the Edlebrock better than the Holley I had on this car, its an easy to use street carb. If I was building a carbed car to race I'd go Holley or Demon.

I didn't actually buy a Holley, I'm converting to fuel injection.

That said, everyone I run with who autocrosses runs Holleys. Part of the Edelbrock's problem with turning is that the floats pivot fore/aft not side to side. I believe that a Holley with center pivot floats takes care of this problem.

An Edelbrock is a fantastic street carb, and you can go pretty quick at the drag strip, but throw hard turning at it and it's not the ideal choice.
