Hi all.
This is just a FYI for my electric fan installation. I thought it might help others...
93GT, stock radiator
INstalled a FLexalite #210, 2 X 12 inch fan + controller
Brothers Performance warehouse web site says "direct fit 79-93". Not eactly true.
Dislikes:
1. Fan is 2 inches longer than fin area on stock radiators. Fixed by removing petcock and pluging drain. (now drain by removing lower radiator hose).
2. Capilary tube design for thermostat is much too delicate a design (copper tube). Could be easily broken or kinked. Mounting method inside upper inlet is just aking for a leak.
3. Thermostat option did not work on my unit. It did not control the turn-on time at all. Very dissapointed in this design. Ditched supplied t-stat and substituted with an industrial temperature switch used for process monitoring (from my work).
4. Temp adjustment knob is too short. My fingers can't even get ahold of the potientometer. Put a freekin knob on it! Requires a tool to adjust. Should be "tool-less".
5. Crimps supplied are exposed, non contact insulated spade females. These should always be insulated spade females. This will prevent you from blowing a fuse (or melting the battery wire) if a wire accidenatlly pops-off or during troubleshooting (like when trying to figure out why the hell the t-stat doesn't work!). I immediately threw the supplied crimps out and substituted high quality fully insulated crimps.
6. 2 of the 4 wire bundles supplied were not identified with temperature rating info (fine print found on the insulation jacket of the wire). I threw all supplied wire out and used 105 Celsius gas/oil resistant wire. I did not trust the wire supplied as it looked like it was vinyl or butyl or low temperature PVC insulation.
7. Fuse holder supplied is 30 amp mini spade auto fuse. Why use a "non-standard" auto fuse. Threw this out and replaced with a standard fuse holder. This keeps my fuse inventory down.
Likes:
1. quiet operation.
2. Cooled just slightly better in stationery operation. Blows like crazy!
3. Low current draw. 20 amps.
4. Very slim unit (less than 3 inches). Opens up the front area nicely!
5. Easy radiator attachment. Was nervous about running ties though the radiator....but it seems to work.
Custom mounted overflow bottle by making a bracket. Same location, just needed a bracket. details...details...details
Overall, it is a nice unit and works as expected for its purpose. However, I was VERY dissapointed with the accessories kit and the controller. A simple afternoon installation turned into 1 1/2 days because I had to buy and substitute the wiring / accesories and the temperature t-stat.
Just wanted to post my experience.
