Electric Fan or Not to Electric Fan?

Simple - no 3G or better alternator, no electric fan. The stock alternator won't put out enough current to run it and the rest of the electrical stuff like ignition, fuel pump, lights and such.

If you have a 3G or better alternator, the electric fan only uses 1/2 HP worth of electricity, a lot less than an engine driven fan.

Find a used sn95 fan. Its more than enough. I got mine used for $43, wont find anything better for that price :) Fwiw, its not a necessity right away if you dont have cooling problems. Just an upgrade to consider in the near future. You WILl need a 3g alternator and the 4g wire/fuse kit.

I just put in a used Taurus 3.8 liter electric fan, best thing I've done to the car! I have a stock alternator, no problems.
The reason it made such a difference, my fan clutch was fried, when my engine was at 6000 RPM, so was the fan! Sounded like a freakin B-17 bomber running under the hood! My stock fan was cracked also, so good riddance to the lot. It's amazing how different it feels, I can't decide how much is real and how much is perceived because all the noise is gone. It revs SO much faster, and feels like it is pulling stronger. Now I'm popping redline all the time, where before I would short-shift it at 4000 or so.

Man, you ain't kiddin! :)

Kurt, definitely get the electric fan with that sexy new radiator. Easy horsepower.

Chris, have you tried advancing timing to 14? Free horsepower is the best... :nice:

Hehe, well, my friend and I were going to do it last week before I took it to the track, but didn't get a chance. I will be doing it soon, hopefully, but probably won't be running it at the track again until sometime later this summer. Also planning on doing a good tune-up and putting in a short belt before the next time I go. That, along with a better 60' time, should drop my time to around where it should be. :nice:

I have run a black magic fan and underdrive pulleys on two different 5.0 stangs, and never ever had a problem with charging on a stock alternator...granted, I had a stock long block, and wasn't running a bazillion watts of stereo equipment, but I have never had a problem.

As for the gains from the electric fan...I don't know if by itself it helped, but the fan and UD pulleys made a tremendous difference in how the engine felt and revved.

A great buy would be the Ram Chargers Dual electric fan. It has a high and low setting and puts out some very nice CFM numbers. The quality and construction are above any and they use very high grade wiring and relays. All you have to do is hook up the power and ground and your good to go. Im using one on my 90 mustang with a novi 2000 supercharger and the fan is a slim 3.39" wide. Cools like a snow storm too. Im putting out 600 hp and I have no heating issues. Hope this helps.

Wow, that is exactly what just happened to me. The clutch was toast and the fan would just turn with the engine. I took the damn thing off last weekend and drove the car and it made a big difference. Like you said, im not sure if it was real or not but it does feel different. I was just tired of starting my car up in a driveway and blowing dust all over the place like it was a lawn mower.

The 3g alt is from a 94+ mustang. It is also from some other cars like a cougar and a thunderbird. Do some research because some are easier to install than others. I got mine from a junkyard for $20. The wiring kit with directions can be bought complete at www.pa-performance.com . You can buy the alternator there too if you like.

YEP! That's what I have and it works great. No need to pay 150 for anything.
