I have a quick question. I bought this 89 Mustang LX probably about 2 months ago, and whoever owned it before me took out the fan shroud for whatever reason. I heard this causes cooling issues, as that shroud helps to push air back onto the engine. I was wonering, I bought an electric fan, would I still need to have that shroud? Here is a pic of my engine bay, so you can see what i mean.

The shroud helps the stock fan pull air through the entire surface of the radiator, which is more critical at idle. Most who have switched to an electric fan are getting away with not having a shroud that forces the air over the entire surface of the radiator, even though that is more preferable.

You are sort of right about the shroud... But for the wrong component. The shroud acutally helps to pull more air across the entire radiatior instead of just local areas. Since the fan pulls air through the radiator, the shroud helps to get some air moving at the outer limits.

No shroud + mechanical fan = bloody fingers or missing fingers.

Most of the OEM (aftermarket to us) electric fans come with a shroud molded into the parts. The Taurus 3.8L fan and the Mark VIII fans are very popluar. However you will need a DCC unit to run them properly (I don't have the link handy right now) and a bigger alternator.

Most electric fans have their own housing so no, you would not need the shroud. By the way get rid of the ram air and get a cold air intake kit for cheap. That ram air causes more bad then good by sucking in road debris.

Thanks guys, got another question, being that the person took out the shroud, I also lost my coolant over-flow tank. I need to buy another one, but where can I mount it, if I dont have the shroud. Oh, and about the Ram Air Intake, I dont think it's doing to much damage now, because the guy that owned this car before me also had the scoop stolen off the car for the ram air, so basically its just a cone filter inside that box as it sits.

Also, where can I order an electric fan for it? 50resto only has electric fans for 94 on up stangs.

I got mine from Jegs Part #778-67015 $125.99 + tax. Proform Electric fan. Direct bolt on for the mustang. It's the same at the Flex-a-lite Black magic fan but almost $100 less (If you rather have the Flex-a-lite it's Part# 400-175 $219.99)
